Application of Foundrisil ® InoculantElkem supply Foundrisil ® inoculantgrades suitable for both metal stream(MSI) and ladle inoculation uponcustomer request, each grade with acomplete certificate of analysis.Foundrisil ® inoculant should be addedto the tapping stream as the ladlesare filled or, preferably, as the metalis transferred from a transfer ladle tocasting ladles. It is advised against toadd the alloy to an empty ladle whereit can oxidise or start to dissolve in anyresidual iron and thus lose its effect. The effects of all inoculants start tofade immediately the addition has beenmade and it is advisable therefore toadd Foundrisil ® inocu lant as late aspossible before pouring the moulds. However, the presence of barium inFoundrisil ® inoculant tends to reducethe fading rate thus giving more latitudeto the time between inoculation andpouring.Addition rates of 0.2 – 0.3%, or evenless, are generally sufficient to giveadequate chill control in grey iron ofnormal sulphur content. Slightly largeradditions may be needed in grey ironcontaining below 0.05% S. Grey ironwith less than about 0.025% S arenotoriously difficult to inoculate and it isgenerally advisable to raise the sulphurcontent of the iron under these circumstances. The addition rates to ductileiron vary according to the grade of ironand the section thickness of the castings, but it is rarely necessary to addmore than 0.5% Foundrisil ® inoculant toobtain the required effect.Foundrisil ® inoculant is one of the mostefficient and consistent economicinoculants for grey and ductile ironsand its correct use should solve mostinoculation problems whilst often givingsome economic advantages.Physical DataStandard SizesStandard PackingApparent Density 3.1– 3.7 g/cm 3In-stream/MSI0.2 – 0.7 mmBig Bag1050 kg on palletBulk Density 1.75 – 2.0 g/cm 3Small Ladle0.7 – 2 mmBig Bag1500 kg on palletMelting Range 1300 –1325 °C (liq)Larger Ladle2 – 6 mmBig Bag500 kg on pallet1208 °C (sol)Paper Bag 25 kg on palletSteel Drum 200 and 220 kgElkem ASFoundry ProductsHoffsveien 65BP.O.
