In fact, it’s been shown that lighting control systemscan reduce lighting energy consumption by 50% in existing buildings and at least 35% in new constructions.*Given these fi gures, it is not surprising that so many specifi ers are implementing automated lighting controlsystems in their projects. By integrating sophisticated cabling, like Clipsal C-Bus, with PIR Motion Sensors,Time Clocks, Light Level Sensors and Multi-Sensors, building owners have not only been able to realisesignifi cant energy savings, but also improved satisfaction and comfort for their occupants. Clipsal IntegratedSystems also offers an easy-to-use interface to a building’s lighting control system in its Schedule Plussoftware package. Enabling powerful real-time event scheduling facilities, Schedule Plus offers operatorssimple Menu and Tab based navigation through a familiar Microsoft Windows environment.Even one of the world’s biggest corporations, McDonald’s, has realized the value of C-Bus in cuttingits building operation costs. When the multinational built its Ti Rakau Drive restaurant in New Zealand in 2003, they demanded thatenergy effi ciency be allowed for in the new building. They employed the expertise of Clipsal SystemsIntegrator, ECOsystems, to implement a cost effective, energy effi cient electrical system. As a busy McDonald’s restaurant, Ti Rakau Drive operates an average of 20 hours per day for 364days of the year, making it crucial that everything happens on schedule at all times. Any down timein signage, appliances and air conditioning can result in lost sales, loss of productivity and huge foodwastage. Given these demands, ECOsystems recommended the installation of C-Bus and the WalkerEnergy Automation System (EAS), as the most effective means of ensuring that building servicesoperate precisely to the exact requirements of the McDonald’s schedule.Fully integrated to the Walker EAS, C-Bus has enabled the scheduling of scenes to coincide withpre-open, store open and store close scenarios. C-Bus controls all exterior and interior lighting, withlight level sensors installed to reduce artifi cial light levels during times when suffi cient natural daylight ispresent. C-Bus PIR motion sensors have been installed in storage areas to reduce wasted lighting hoursand a touch screen is also provided to allow manual and override control for all electrical services.Controlled via an on-site PC, the Walker EAS provides a graphical interface to the C-Bus system, allowingstaff to easily control all lighting, appliances and air handling units. Combined, C-Bus and the Walker EASprovided a simple and reliable automation solution that has not only reaped signifi cant energy savings butalso created a comfortable and productive work environment for customers and staff respectively. In fact, McDonald’s have been so impressed by the technology and energy savings achieved, that as aresult of this installation, McDonald’s are evaluating the viability of implementing C-Bus and the WalkerEAS into their existing restaurant portfolio and new restaurant developments.*Advanced Lighting Guidelines, 2001 Edition.kWh4000035000300002500020000150001000050000McDonald’s Takanini Monthly Energy UsageECO energy efficiencyupgrade. In addition, therewas the necessity to provide a fl exible interface with DMX 512. The industry leader in theatrical lightingcontrol, DMX 512 provides console control of all lighting and special effects. To meet these requirements, an innovative C-Bus network layout was designed, with C-Bus controlling allgeneral lighting including corridors and main foyer areas, stairwells, car park and walkways, with generallighting relays located across eight distribution boards throughout the complex. The relays also control themain auditorium stair LED lighting, high level work lights and motorized blinds, as well as catwalk lighting inthe main auditorium, providing low level LED lighting to guide production crew members during events. In addition, with the introduction of the High Power Professional Series Dimmers in 2003, ClipsalIntegrated Systems was capable of creating a high level interface to DMX and consequently HillsongChurch became the fi rst auditorium-like project in Australia to utilise Clipsal’s High Power Dimmertechnology. To enable the DMX system, a touch screen is located in the security offi ce, providing theSite Manager with complete control over all C-Bus lighting networks as well as the ability to activateDMX. DMX control of the main auditorium is then achieved via the master controller located at thelighting control desk in the centre of the auditorium. One of the most unique features of the project, is the ability to divide the 3,500 seat auditorium into nineseparate lecture theatres. When in lecture theatre mode, each room has been allocated two wall mounted, four gang key input units, to provide convenient, localized lighting control. Each key input unit has beenlinked to Clipsal’s HomeMinder Unit, which has been programmed to activate specific scenes that suit thelecture theatre environment. This enables lighting to be turned on or off and ramped up or down.Providing localized, as well as total control over theentire complex, the automation system has createda high impact theatrical solution for the church andsucceeded in shaping the centre as a multi-use facility.Right: A typical screen from the Touch Screen.Editor Joanna Pittas Designer Renate KlocknerEnquiries (08) 8440 0500Disclaimer Clipsal Integrated Systems reserves the rightto change specifi cations or designs described in thispublication without notice and without obligation.© Copyright Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd 2004.All rights reserved. This material is copyright under Australian andinternational laws. It also houses13 function rooms and six innovative restaurants offering Pan Asian, Latin andauthentic Italian cuisine.Given the extent of the building’s electrical system – 26 areas on 700 circuits– there was no doubt that an automated system would be required to allow forthe setting and scheduling of different lighting scenes. So Clipsal’s C-Bus Controland Management system was specifi ed, based on its proven performance record, the local support available and local stock. The Westin Kuala Lumpur AV Manager, Sham Abbas, believes the inclusion of C-Bus inthe project has provided a level of flexibility unachievable with conventional wiring.“C-Bus has provided easy execution of lighting,” said Sham. “We really enjoy thedifferent mood settings throughout the day, that create a cosy and relaxed feelingfor our guests.”The C-Bus system has been designed to control lighting in all public areasincluding, ballrooms, restaurants, meeting rooms and lobby areas. Each area hasbeen separated into zones, with the scheduling of lighting scenes divided into day, evening and night.Clipsal’s recently released Architectural Dimmers have been utilised in the project, along with the stylish Neo switch plate and Clipsal Touch Screen. Combined, theseinnovative C-Bus products have provided staff and management with fl exible, adaptable and user-friendly control over the hotel’s lighting system. While C-Bus has the potential to achieve signifi cant energy savings via a lowmaintenance system, to this point, by programming automated lighting schedules,C-Bus has successfully eliminated the risk of human error, ensuring a comfortableambience for The Westin Kuala Lumpur guests year-round.INSIDEThe Westin Kuala Lumpur has successfully combined5-star facilities with the latest technology from ClipsalIntegrated Systems.» Announcement» C-Bus Products» Engineering» Energy Management» Profiles» Hillsong ChurchConvention Centre
