GRAMMAR<br />

I. Prohibition or negative command.<br />

a) This may be expressed by noli \vith the infinitive, by cave with<br />

the present subjunctive, or by ne with the perfect subjunctive.<br />

Noli iis fidere. Do not trust them.<br />

Cave labaris. Do not slip.<br />

Illud ne dixeritis. Do 110t say that.<br />

b) The future imperative with ne is more formal.<br />

N e jus civile negligitote. Do not disregard the civillaw.<br />

c) '""fhe future \vith non is sometimes used in general precepts intended<br />

for all time.<br />

Non oeeides. 1 1 hou shalt not kill.<br />

Non furtum faeies.Thou shalt not steal.<br />

2. The future participle.<br />

a) The chief use of the future participle is to form the active periphrastic<br />

with esse.<br />

Deeessuri sunt. They are about to die.<br />

Ignem tacturus erat. He uJas about to touch the fire.<br />

b) Without esse the future participle may be used in agreement with<br />

a noun to denote future likelihood or intention.<br />

Servos jamvero egressuros ejecit. He ejected the servants who already<br />

intended to leave.<br />
