2. Locative case.<br />

a) This case was used to indicate the place where a thing was located,<br />

but has come to be replaced by the ablative, usually with in,<br />

except in the names of towns, small islands, and a few other words.<br />

Romae, at Rome<br />

Philippis, at Philippi<br />

Athenis, at Athens<br />

Rhodi, at Rhodes<br />

Cypri, at Cyprus<br />

Capreis, at Capri<br />

belli, at war<br />

A few adverbs of time are locative.<br />

heri, yesterday<br />

militiae, in n1ilitary sert'ice<br />

humi, on the ground<br />

domi, at hOfne<br />

foris, out of doors<br />

ruri, in the country<br />

terra marique, by land and s~a<br />

vesperi, in the ~vening<br />

b) In the singular of the first and second declensions the locative<br />

has the same form as the genitive. This includes domi, which has<br />

forms in both second and fourth declensions. In the plural and in the<br />

third declension the locative has the same form as the dative or<br />

ablative.<br />

c) From the fifth declension have come a few adverbs and expressions<br />

of time ending in e.<br />

hodie, today<br />

perendie, day after tomorrow<br />

mane, in the morning<br />

die quarto, the fourth day<br />

pridie, the day before<br />

3. Future perfect tense. This tense is much commoner in <strong>Latin</strong> than<br />

in English.<br />

a) The future perfect denotes action as completed in the future.<br />

Dt statuta servaveritis, ita pace fruemini. As you keep the laws, so<br />

will you enjoy peace.<br />

Perendie noverit quid fecerint. By the day after tomorrow he will<br />

know what they have done.
