I. Affirmabilitas: the state of being capable of affirmation; that<br />

which can be declared to be true.<br />

2. Formaliter: with respect to or according to form; essentially;<br />

strictly speaking.<br />

GRAMMAR<br />

I. Quin with the meaning of but that, except that, unless, that not,<br />

that, after negative verbs of hindering, prohibiting, doubting, or similar<br />

ideas, requires the suhjunctive.<br />

Unum nequit affirmari in recto de altero, quin sint idem. One thing<br />

cannot be affirrned directly concerning another, except that they be<br />

th~ same thing.<br />

Non dubitabat quin ei crederemus. He did not doubt that we believed<br />

him.<br />

Id non praeveniebat quin semetipsos excusarent. That did not prevent<br />

them from excusing themselves.<br />

2. Ablative absolute. This construction consists in a noun or pronoun<br />

in the ablative case with an accompanying word or words (usually<br />

a past participle) in the same case. It is grammatically independent<br />

of the rest of the sentence in which it occurs and may be used to<br />
