I. ActuaIitas: actual or real existence of a thing so far as this is endo\-ved<br />

with form.<br />

2. Corruptibilis: in its widest sense of general deterioration. An<br />

object is corrupt when it has lost its original soundness or integrity.<br />

3. Praescindere: to cut 00; to abstract or separat~ from.<br />

I. The Subjunctive Mood.<br />

GRAMMAR<br />

a) Clauses of result take the subjunctive introduced by ut (negative,<br />

ut non).<br />

Talis est participii indoles, ut accipi possit ut nomen. Such is th~<br />

nature of a participle that it can be taken as a noun.<br />

b) Sive (seu), whether, may be used to introduce a conditional<br />

clause. If a fact is stated, the indicative is used. The subj unctive is<br />

required when a supposition or possibility is implied.<br />

Sive ducit sive sequitur, solet opiniones suas exprimere. Whether he<br />

leads or whether he jolloWJ, he is accustonled to express his opinions.<br />

Nomina exprimunt aptitudinenl alicujus rei ad existendum, sive<br />

ilIa res actu existat sive non. Nouns express the aptitude of s01nething<br />

to exist, whether that thing exists in reality or not.<br />

e) Conditional clauses of comparison take the subj unctive. They<br />

may be introduced by tanquam (tamquam), tamquam si, quasi, ac si,<br />

ut si, velnt si, all meaning as if, and by quam si, than it. The tense is<br />

usually present or perfect. Post hoc erimus, tanquam non fuerimus.<br />

After this we shall be as if we had not been.
