The infinitive may be used variously.<br />

a) With est and similar verbs, as the subject or in apposition with<br />

the subject or as predicate nominative.<br />

Orare bonum est. It is good to pray.<br />

Id, v.g., gratias agere, actus amoris est. This, namely, to give thanks, is<br />

an act of love.<br />

Illud erat inimicis caritatem exhibere. That was showing charity to th~<br />

ene1ny.<br />

b) As the apparent subject of impersonal verbs.<br />

Naturam hominis considerare pertinet ad theologum. To consider the<br />

nature of man pertains to the theologian.<br />

c) After many verbs if their subject is also the subject of the infinitive.<br />

Rebus practicis operam dare solent. They are accustomed to devote<br />

themselves to practical thz"ngs.<br />

d) With the subj ect in the accusative case after verbs of knowing,<br />

thinking, telling, and the like (indirect discourse).<br />

Scio theologunl ternlinunl illum definivisse. I know that the theologian<br />

has defined that term.<br />

e) To express purpose. Nobis manducare dedit. He gave us something<br />

to eat.<br />
