WORD STUDY<br />

I. Factitius. An idea is said to be factitius when it is the result of<br />

several ideas being cOITtbined by the mind to form a new idea of<br />

which the mind has had no previous knowledge.<br />

2. Reflexus. A reflex idea is one whose object is within the mind,<br />

such as the idea of one's own happiness.<br />

GRAMMAR<br />

I. Present participle. Used only in the active voice, the present participle<br />

has the force of both a verb and an adjective. As adjective it<br />

shows agreement; as a verb it may take an object. Objectum extra<br />

cognoscentem est. The object is outside the person recognizing it.<br />

2. Conjunctions that require special notice.<br />

a) et (and) simply connects words or clauses. Ideae dividuntur in<br />

intuitivas et factitias. Ideas are divided into intuitive and factitious.<br />

b) ·que (and) combines more closely into a connected whole.<br />

-que is added as an enclitic to the word connected. Aqua ignique<br />

deleta sunt. They have been destroyed by {ire and water (combined).<br />

c) Atque, ac (and) lays more emphasis on the added word. It may<br />

be translated and so, and yet, and besides, and then. Omnia bona atque<br />

mala. Everything good and everything bad besides.<br />

d) Sed, verum, vero (but), the last two being more emphatic. These<br />

words are used to introduce something in opposition to what precedes.<br />

e) At introduces a new point in an argument and is more emphatic<br />

than sed.<br />

f) At enim introduces a supposed objection which is presently to<br />

be refuted.
