39. Ablative absolute. This construction consists of a phrase in<br />

the ablative case made up of a noun or adjective and a participle,<br />

a noun and an adjective, or two nouns. As its name implies, it is<br />

grammatically independent of the sentence in which it occurs, that<br />

is, it does not refer to the same person or thing as the subject or<br />

object of the main verb. It is best translated by a clause introduced<br />

by although, when, since, or the like.<br />
