im LES ORDONNANCES ECCLESIASTIQUES DE 1501. *) Les Ordonnances ecclésiastiques de l'Eglise de Génère ci-deyant faites, depuis augmentées, et dernièrement confermees par nos treshonnorez Seigneurs Syndiques, petit et grand Conseil des deux cens, et general, le Jeudi 13 de Novembre, 15
93 ORDONNANCES. 94 a demonstre et institué par sa parole, fast reduict en bonne forme, pour [page 4] avoir lieu et estre observé entre nous. Et ainsi avons ordonné et estably de suivre et garder en nostre ville et territoire, la police Ecclésiastique qui s ? ensuit: comme nous voyons qu'elle est .piïnse de l'Evangile de Iesus Christ. Premièrement il y a quatre ordres ou espèces d'offices, que nostre Seigneur a institué pour le gouvernement de son Eglise: assavoir les Pasteurs, puis les Docteurs, après les Anciens, quartement les Diacres. Pourtant si nous voulons avoir l'Eglise bien ordonnée et l'entretenir en son entier, il nous faut observer ceste forme de regime. Quant est des Pasteurs, que l'Escriture nomme aussi aucunesfois Surveillans, Anciens et Ministres: leur office est d'annoncer la parole de Dieu pour endoctriner, admonester, exhorter et reprendre tant en public qu'en particulier, administrer les Sacremens, et faire les corrections fraternelles avec les Anciens ou commis. • Or afin que rien ne se face confusément en l'Eglise, nul ne se doit ingérer en cest office sans vocation: en laquelle il faut considérer trois choses, assavoir l'Examen qui est le principal: après, à qui il appartient d'instituer les Ministres: tiercement, quelle cérémonie ou façon d'agir il est bon de garder à les introduire en l'office. [page 6] L'examen contient deux parties, dont la premiere est touchant la doctrine: assavoir si celui qu'on doit ordonner, a bonne et saincte cognoissance de l'Escriture, et puis s'il est idoine et propre pour la communiquer au peuple en edification. Aussi pour éviter tous, dangers que celui qu'on veut recevoir n'ait quelque mauvaise opinion, il est requis qu'il proteste de tenir la doctrine approuvée en l'Eglise, sur tout selon le contenu du Catéchisme. Pour cognoistre s'il est propre à enseigner, il faudra procéder par interrogations, et par l'ouir traitter en privé la doctrine du Seigneur. La seconde partie est de la vie: assavoir s'il est de bonnes moeurs, et s'il s'est tousiours gouverné sans reproche. La reigle d'y procéder est tresbien demonstree par sainct Paul, laquelle il nous convient tous observer. SENSUIT A QUI IL APPARTIENT D'INSTITUEE LES PASTEURS. . Nous avons trouvé que le meilleur est en cest endroict de suivre l'ordre de l'Eglise anoienne, veu que ce n'est qu'une pratique de ce qui nous est monstre par l'Escriture. .C'est que les Ministres eslisent premièrement celui qu'on devra mettre en l'office, l'ayant faic£ assavoir à nostre petit Conseil: après, qu'on l'y présente : et s'il est trouvé digne, [page .6] qu'il y soit receu et accepté: lui donnant tesmoignàge pour le produire finalement au peuple en la predication, afin qu'il soit receu par consentement commun dé la compagnie des fidèles. Addition de ce qui a esté passé et conclu au conseil des deux Cens le 9 de Février 1560 pour declarer comme cest article de la presentation doit estre entendu, et pour corriger l'abus qui s'y estoi commis. Item, sur ce que lesdits spectables Ministres nous ont remonstré, que l'ordonnance faicte sur leur presentation n'avoit point esté gardée, d'autant que ceux qui estoyent esleuz et acceptez par la Seigneurie ont esté présentez simplement au temple, sans demander si on les approuvoit: et que par cela le peuple et tout le corps de l'Eglise ont esté fraudez de leur liberté, en quoy aussi il nous est apparu qu'on s'estoit destourné de ce qui avoit este bien estably du commencement: ioint aussi que lesdicts Ministres nous ont remonstré qu'en tout ceci ils ne cerchent point nul avantage pour eux, mais plustost qu'eux et leurs successeurs soyent tenuz en bride plus courte: Nous avons aussi arresté, que PEdict ancien selon sa teneur soit deueinent observé. Et afin de prévenir tel abus comme il estoit survenu, et qu'il n'y ait point de cérémonie en nostre Eglise sans ce que la vérité et substance y soit coniointe: nous avons proveu du remède qui s'ensuit. C'est quand un Ministre sera esleu, que son nom soit proclamé avec [page 7] avertissement, que celui qui saura à redire sur lui le vienne declarer devant le iour qu'il devra estre présenté: afin que s'il n'estoit point capable de l'office, on procède à nouvelle election. Et pour ce que les Anciens qui sont commis pour le Consistoire et superintendence de l'Eglise ont charge commune avec les Ministres de la parole, nous avons aussi arresté que leurs noms soyent publiez en l'Eglise : tant affin qu'ils ayent authorité requise à exercer leur estât, qu'aussi pour donner à tous ceux de l'Eglise liberté d'avertir de leur insuffisance ceux que il appartiendra, assavoir lun des quatre Syndiques;
