Josef Karl Stieler The

Josef Karl Stieler The Father of Schloss Nymphenburg’s Gallery of Beauties In 1829 King Ludwig I gave his court painter, Joseph Karl Stieler, a piece of land in Tegernsee during a walk on Tegernsee with the words: “So, Stieler, build yourself a summer house here“. As one can gather from the records of the sculptor, Christian Daniel Rauch, none other than the king himself and the architect Leo von Klenze chose the building site for the Stieler house in August 1829 after a visit with Karoline, the widow of the king. It was constructed in the years 1829/30 by local craftsmen and became the first summer resort on Lake Tegernsee. At the time of King Ludwig I, there was an artist superstar: Josef Karl Stieler, the most popular portrait painter in Germany. He became famous with his paintings of Beethoven, Alexander von Humboldt and Goethe and, naturally, with the gallery of the most beautiful European women, which he created as the court painter of the Bavarian king between1820 and 1855. Who does not know the famous portrait of Lola Montez, the monarch’s lover, for whom he had to resign in 1848? It is said that Stieler only painted her reluctantly; or the gorgeous bourgeois daughter, Helene Sedlmeier, who is also eternalised in the Schönheitengalerie (Gallery of Beauties) in Schloss Nymphenburg? The Stieler House in Tegernsee But who knows that Stieler lived on Lake Tegernsee for many years? The Westerhof Café in the Stieler House Today there is a beautiful, cosy Café Restaurant with a garden in the Stieler Haus: an elegant modern glass building. One can not only eat breakfast, drink coffee, indulge in gourmet food and enjoy the many cultural events here, but also admire many original pieces of furniture: tables, chairs, and cabinets of the Stieler Family, as well as the lovely square piano, on which Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy is said to have played. He was also a guest here just like many other celebrities, such as the writer Clemens Brentano, Franz von Kobell and Hans Christian Andersen. Like Stieler, they all enjoyed the atmospheric ambience of the house directly overlooking Lake Tegernsee. Today, the Café invites us to enjoy the 19th century artists as well as a coffee or a delicious meal.
