114 mehr. Zudem sind kostbare Klosterarbeiten, Krippen und Fatschnkindl sowie zwei Hauskapellen zu bewundern. Ein Muss ist der historische Ratssaal, natürlich von Gabriel von Seidl. Stadtmuseum in Bad Tölz Marktstraße 48 83646 Bad Tölz Tel: 08041 793 51 56 www.bad-toelz.de OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSEUMS Bad Tölz Museum The Marktstraße in Bad Tölz is one of the most beautiful streets (pedestrian zones) in all of Upper Bavaria, and the Town Museum is located in one of the most prestigious buildings in the Marktstraße. It is a building with an eventful history. Initially it was Bürgerbräu, or “Pierpreu” des Balthasar Bürger, then it was a beer and wine bar, next it became town hall and finally as of 1981, a museum. The architect, Gabriel von Seidl, to whom the city mainly owes its current magnificent appearance, renovated the impressive building at the beginning of the last century. He gave the building a double arched pediment and bay windows, and designed the façade decorations to include the city emblem and a moon clock. Over the windows of the second floor one can catch a glimpse of the, at one time, widely known “Tölzer Rose” in the painted flower baskets. In the museum we see them again painted on old farmhouse furniture, the so-called “Tölzer Kästen” (Tölzer Chests). The “Tölzer Rose” is a crimson red peony painted with rapid brushstrokes, usually on a blue background. The wives of the chest makers generally painted the roses, which like all roses, symbolically stand for the Mother of God, Maria. The Tölzer furniture forms were rather simple, but their strong colourful paintings made the “chests” magnificent and into a coveted export item, which was shipped throughout Europe over the Danube River. One can marvel at a selection of the furniture, especially a four-posted canopy bed decorated with roses on the second floor. The newly designed sections of the museum are also found here. Over the next few years the redesign will include all rooms. Visitors are offered a panorama of Tölzer history already today, which makes a visit very much worthwhile. In addition to rafting, one can learn a lot about the Tölzer brewing trade, lime kiln and Holzerei, the first city pharmacy, Lebzelterei and candle manufacturing, the Tölzer Glassworks and much more. Additionally, there are precious monastery works, crèches and baby Jesus figures wrapped in linen as well as two private chapels to admire. The historic council hall is a must, naturally also from Gabriel von Seidl. Stadtmuseum Bad Tölz Marktstraße 48 83646 Bad Tölz Tel: +49 (0)8041 793 51 56 www.bad-toelz.de
