Artist Portrait Nikos W. Dettmer MASTER OF BRONZE SCULPTURE The artist's diverse bronze figures convince through their artistic liveliness. The animal sculptures, for example, are masterpieces of representational realism. They enchant the viewer on the one hand through the power they radiate, and on the other hand through the plasticity and play of colour in the material. However, it was not the fine arts that captivated Nikos W. Dettmer at the beginning of his career. His first love was music and opera. And so his artistic career developed only after he had studied opera with Professor August Everding and trained as a classical singer. Work on stage and the desire to make emotions visible in facial expressions and gestures led him to sculpture and painting. The first bronzes show opera figures, only later were animal sculptures and portrait busts added. 21 The bronze series of gestural abstraction emerged from his preoccupation with Far Eastern philosophy. The work "Love Barometer", for example, reveals the artist's sense of humour: The bronze couple shown is movable. They can be arranged in different ways – facing each other or back to back – depending on the mood and state of mind of the viewer.
