12 Doch wer war es, der den Brauch, ein Tannenbäumelein aufzustellen nach München brachte? Die beiden ersten bayerischen Königinnen, Karoline, die Frau König Maximilians I. und Therese, die Gemahlin Ludwig I. werden häufig genannt. Beide Könige erwählten sich schöne Damen aus protestantischem Haus und diese wollten wohl die Sitte des geschmückten Baumes zu Weihnachten nicht missen. Spätestens seit 1809 ist belegt, dass ein Christbaum in der Münchner Residenz aufgestellt wurde. Daher ist es wahrscheinlicher, dass Königin Karoline den Brauch für München und das bayerische Oberland begründete, denn Therese von Sachsen- Hildburghausen heiratete Ludwig erst ein Jahr später, im Jahre 1810. Wahrscheinlich der erste Christbaum am Tegernsee Es ist nicht gesichert, aber durchaus wahrscheinlich, dass Königin Karoline auch den ersten Christbaum am Tegernsee aufstellte. Sie hatte sich in das Tegernseer Tal verliebt und vor allem auf ihre Veranlassung erwarb ihr Gemahl König Max Joseph 1816 Kloster Tegernsee und ließ es zum Schloss umbauen. Von da an waren Schloss Tegernsee und Wildbad Kreuth bevorzugte Aufenthaltsorte der königlichen Familie und ihrer Gäste. Bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts hatten sich die Weihnachtsbäume fast überall in Deutschland durchgesetzt. In Berlin wurden 1919 zum ersten Mal elektrisch beleuchtete „Volksweihnachtsbäume“ aufgestellt, Initiator war das Rote Kreuz. Heute gehört der Weihnachtsbaum, der in Süddeutschland Christbaum genannt wird, nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern in vielen Ländern der Welt zu Heiligabend und die glitzernden, hell erleuchteten Tannenbäume sind Teil vieler Städte in der Weihnachtszeit. The evergreen branches were supposed to ward off demons and invoke a good new year. It was probably in Strasbourg where the first Christmas trees were set up in the 16th century. During the 17th/18th century, the Christmas tree first established itself in Protestant areas, so it was often referred to as the "Lutheran Christmas tree." It was not until the 19th century that it came to the Catholic areas and thus also to Upper Bavaria. But who was it who brought the custom of putting up a little Christmas tree to Munich? The first two Bavarian queens, Karoline, the wife of King Maximilian I, and Therese, the wife of Ludwig I, are often mentioned. Both kings chose beautiful ladies from Protestant homes and they probably did not want to miss the custom of the decorated tree at Christmas. Since 1809 at the latest, it has been documented that a Christmas tree was set up in the Munich Residenz. It is therefore more likely that Queen Karoline established the custom for Munich and the Bavarian Oberland, because Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen did not marry Ludwig until a year later, in 1810. She had fallen in love with the Tegernsee valley and it was mainly at her instigation that her husband King Max Joseph acquired Tegernsee Monastery in 1816 and had it converted into a castle. From then on, Tegernsee Castle and Wildbad Kreuth were preferred places of residence for the royal family and their guests. By the end of the 19th century, Christmas trees had become established almost everywhere in Germany. In Berlin, electrically illuminated "people's Christmas trees" were set up for the first time in 1919, initiated by the Red Cross. Today, the Christmas tree, called Christbaum in southern Germany, is part of Christmas Eve not only in Germany but in many countries around the world, and the glittering, brightly lit fir trees are part of many cities during the Christmas season.
