Im Zentrum des Opernprogramms stehen drei Neuproduktionen: Riccardo Muti und Peter Stein nehmen sich Giuseppe Verdis „Macbeth“, Shakespeares Werk um Macht und Herrschaft, in der Felsenreitschule an. Christian Thielemann und Christoph Loy zeigen ihre Interpretation von Richard Strauss’ „Frau ohne Schatten“. Die Janácek-Tradition der Salzburger Festspiele fortsetzend, steht erstmals und ebenfalls im Großen Festspielhaus Leoš Janáceks „Die Sache Makropulos“ auf dem Spielplan. In allen drei Opern spielen die Wiener Philharmoniker.
