22 OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL

22 OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSEUMS The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel Franz Marc and his artist friends gave an entire region its name: the charming area surrounding Lake Staffelsee and Lake Kochelsee is called the “Blaues Land” (Blue Country) after the favourite colour of the artists’ association, “Blauer Reiter”, to which the worldwide famous expressionists Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter belonged. In order to get to the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel, which offers an extensive presentation of the artist’s works, one must aim high, up a hill and through a small park. On they way, one already encounters art as modern sculptures surround the path. The white museum building is impressive with a large window on the second floor that opens itself to the nearby mountains. The building, constructed in 2008 by the Swiss architects Diethelm & Spillmann, is an extension of the Franz-Marc-Museum founded in 1986. The restaurant & café, “Blauer Reiter”, is located in the historical villa. Not only the delicious dishes draw guests to the panorama terrace during the summer, but also the view of Lake Kochelsee and the Alps, or as we say, of the highly acclaimed “Blaues Land”. Born in Munich, Franz Marc initially only spent summers together with his artist friends in this enchanted area. He later moved to Kochel (part of the Tölzer Land) with his wife Maria, where he is also buried. In the museum dedicated to him, the works of Franz Marc are now comprehensively presented on Franz Marc, Postkarte von Franz Marc an Paul Klee, 8.11.1913, mit Illustration von Franz Marc, Drei Pferde in Landschaft mit Häusern, Franz Marc Museum, Foto: collecto.art 700 square metres and enriched with new aspects: for example through the juxtaposition of works from his contemporaries, such as the expressionist artists of the “Brücke”. New building BLAU RAUM The new building designed by architect Wolf Kortüm with a multifunctional room, depot and terrace offers exciting spaces for the museum‘s the museum‘s new art education program: For example, the numerous courses and workshops for children, families and adults.
