FROM THE EDITOR-AT-LARGE

FROM THE EDITOR-AT-LARGE Making History. What once was the norm in our profession is mostly not the way it is today. Sure, we still answer calls, take reports, enforce traffic laws, arrest offenders, protect lives and property…Well, you get the idea. As a Chief in today’s world, you must be constantly thinking, analyzing, processing, evaluating, and trying new ideas about how you can create the most welcoming, supportive, and effective working environment for your employees. ALL your employees. Gone are the days of 6-foot tall, lean and mean male law enforcement agencies. Our profession has become a reflection of our communities. We have become diverse, accepting and more understanding than how we once were. I say all of this because I’m proud of the history our agency made on September 21, 2023. Our Day Watch on this particular day was an all-female team. Including the Service K-9 we have for helping people, specifically children who may need her for whatever emotional crisis they may be having. Each officer on duty that day, brings to the plate a diverse background. Experience in patrol, investigations, and crisis negotiations. All three are great individuals who know how to treat others with respect and often to get people to deescalate without a whole lot of trouble. As the Chief of the Tribal Police 8 The BLUES Department, it was a privilege to witness this ‘first’ and one I’ll not soon forget. Nor will I ever take for granted the hard work these young women have provided for this great community. This moment was not taken lightly. They earned it. Hard work and Dedication to Duty. Dedication to their community and most important, dedication to one another. From my first appointment as Chief of Police in 2012, I strive to provide a fair and equitable opportunity for everyone who was willing to put in the work, do the job and act accordingly. I say that because I am keenly aware this has not always been the case in our profession. Believe me, I have run across a supervisor or two in my time who well, didn’t necessarily follow this doctrine. Now to be fair, I am NOT the “perfect” Police Chief. I honestly don’t believe there is such a person. However, I have along with Chiefs from all across this State and Country, have consistently tried hard to be the best Chief of Police I can be. Not for ourselves. But for those who are entrusted unto us. We have a solemn obligation to take care of the people who are taking care of our community. I have seen first-hand some who have implied this person or that person should not be a cop because of _______. I’m not inclined to follow this ideology. My only concern is when I look to CHIEF REX EVANS my left or my right, are you still standing right beside me or not? If you are, you are golden. I don’t care what you look like, what your social life is like, what religion you are or whatever other lame excuse people can find. I only care if you were a good person and a good cop. Do you genuinely care about the job and the people around you. Finally, while this was a historic day for us, I am not lost in the fact that we still have much to improve upon. There is always more to do, more to try and more to learn. It is important to our profession that we continue to evolve and reflect that which our community / communities demand of us. This is not always easy, but it is the cycle of our profession. Get better. Do better. Or get out. Today, thanks in no small part to three amazing human beings who just happen to be female Police Officers, we did a little be better and we are consistently getting better. A fact that I am humbly, very proud of. God Bless and be safe out there.
