TIDE TURNING Another

TIDE TURNING Another major change began in the beginning of the 1960s, when smaller cars began being used as squad vehicles. As the compact car was slowly making its way into the world, police began turning their attention from the large and mid-sized sedans. The shift in taste culminated with some call “the ultimate police car” of the ‘70s (and since), the Chevrolet Nova Police package. It surfaced in 1975, codenamed 9C1, and was powered by a LM1 350-cid, four-barrel carbureted V8 engine, developing 155 hp. Unfortunately, by the end of the 1970s, the oil crisis began and stricter emission regulations slowly pushed big engines out of the cars and consequently out of law enforcement. By early 1980s, big engines were nearly extinct and police departments had to turn to the likes of the Ford Fairmont and Plymouth Volare. Most of the police-spec vehicles were the same as the ones built for taxi use. By the mid 80s, police agencies had various uses for their patrol vehicles, which led to the current classes of police cars. The advent of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) also opened the door for government agencies to set themselves apart from regular police forces. Since the 1990s, police are classified in police pursuit vehicles (PPV), special service vehicles (SSV) and special package vehicles (SSP). 96 The BLUES

THE FORD LTDs 1977-1979 Ford LTD II Police Car 1984 Ford LTD LX The Ford LTD II is an automobile that was marketed and produced by the Ford Motor Company between 1977 and 1979 in the United States and Canada. Deriving its name from the full-size Ford LTD model line, the intermediate LTD II was equipped with a police package and a 5.0 Engine. Ask almost anyone about the Ford LTD LX and you’ll probably draw a blank stare, except maybe from a highway patrol officer. This car was and remains virtually unknown due to the fact that only 3,260 were manufactured for civilian public sale and 800 for police use. The BLUES 97
