RAYMOND SIMPER CENTRAL

RAYMOND SIMPER CENTRAL POLICE The BLUES First Advertiser WORDS BY MICHAEL BARRON, FOUNDER OF THE BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE In 1984, while just a rookie at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a few of my fellow deputies and I met at the Humble City Café to talk about creating a newsletter for the newly created Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Union. I learned that the union was willing to share in the revenue generated by the aforementioned newsletter in an 80/20 split, with Mikey B. receiving the 20%. Now it didn’t take a genius to figure out that was going to be a lot of work for only 20%. So I decided to create my own newsletter/tabloid and charge the Union to include THEIR information in MY publication. On that 20th day of November, just before Thanksgiving, the concept for the County Blues was born. But if this new venture was going to work, I needed advertisers. At the time, I only knew one guy that was in the police supply business – Raymond Simper, the owner of Central Police Supply. I had been a frequent customer of ‘Ray’s Police Emporium’ and had become good friends with Ray. So, on a cold rainy day in December, I waltzed into Central and announced to Ray I was starting a police newspaper and what did he think of the idea. And he says, “there already is a Police Newspaper in town, it’s called the Badge & Gun. So, you might want to think of something else to occupy your time Mikey.” But Ray, I know about the Badge & Gun and it’s an association newspaper and the County Blues will be for everyone. “That’s the name ----County Blues---like as in Harris County? That’s the name you picked out?” says Ray in his somewhat sarcastic voice. 74 The BLUES 74 The BLUES
