port to the Mayor’s Office in the search for Chattanooga’s next police chief. “While we are entering a time of uncertainty, our resolve to provide exceptional front-line services to the residents of Chattanooga remains steadfast. They deserve and expect that from our Membership.” DASH CAM VIDEO: SUSPECT VEHICLE COLLIDES WITH OHIO CRUISER HEAD-ON DURING PURSUIT By Kristen Spicker Dayton Daily News, Ohio HUBER HEIGHTS, OH. — Dash camera footage of a police chase early Saturday in Huber Heights has been released. Officers arrested a juvenile male after he fled a traffic stop around 1:43 a.m. He was booked into the Montgomery County Juvenile Justice Center for assault, obstructing official business and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer. Officers initiated a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Cruze that had its lights off and was struggling to stay in its lane, according to police. Dash camera footage showed the car veering to the left before cutting back over to the right side of the road. Police initiated a traffic stop, believing the driver may be intoxicated. Once the officer turned on the cruiser’s overhead lights the Chevrolet accelerated and failed to stop at a stop sign. Police conducted multiple PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuvers during the chase, but the Chevrolet managed to continue fleeing. At one point the car drove over a curb and onto a sidewalk after turning. During one of the PIT maneuvers video footage showed the Chevrolet spin around before coming to a brief stop facing the cruiser. The Chevrolet and cruiser then collided head on. The driver was able to continue fleeing in the car and eventually drove onto a lawn near apartments in the Bufort Boulevard and Fisher Drive area. The driver got out of the car and went into the apartment complex, according to police. Officers later found the driver in the area and took him into custody. Lt. Henry Schmiemann, who was shot and killed during a robbery while walking to work 50 years ago, was honored with a street renaming ceremony on June 22, according to the report. In a poignant tribute, his grandson, also named Henry Schmiemann, received a police shield bearing his grandfather’s number during the ceremony. “It’s an honor to wear my grandfather’s shield number,” the younger Schmiemann said. “I feel like I’ve been given a responsibility greater than what is behind the NYPD, which is immense. I’m just glad everyone’s here celebrating my grandfather.” The new street sign was unveiled during the event, according to the report. “Our father left way too early, but we know that Henry is going to get the guidance and help from my father as he does his job,” said Peter Schmiemann, Henry’s uncle. The elder Schmiemann’s kill- 72 The Blues - July ‘24
