AROUND THE COUNTRY CHARLES CITY CNTY, VA. Sergeant Floyd Miles suffered a fatal heart attack while struggling with a subject inside an ambulance. CHARLES CITY COUNTY, VA. – A deputy from Virginia died Sunday in the line of duty after suffering a medical emergency following a struggle with an individual. A spokesperson for the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office said Sergeant Floyd H. Miles, Jr. was monitoring traffic when a man on a moped fell on his vehicle. Miles noticed blood on the man and asked if he was OK, to which he responded that people were after him and trying to kill him. According to the spokesperson, “he repeatedly said that and the deputy then placed him into the rear of their vehicle and called EMS for further observation.” Charles City County Fire and EMS personnel moved the man into the back of an ambulance when they arrived. After several minutes, Miles went to the ambulance and the man became combative towards the deputy and hit him. “A struggle ensued between the subject against law enforcement and EMS. As a result of the struggle, the deputy suffered a medical emergency,” the spokesperson said. Miles was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he later died. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office says Miles was born and raised in Charles City County, a place he truly loved. “Upon graduating Charles City County High School he enlisted in the United States Army. Sgt. Miles returned to serve Charles City County Sheriff’s Office proudly for 16 years. He was supervisor of Patrol and Animal Control. He had true genuine passion not only for the residents of Charles City County, but all residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He constantly excelled in his field most recently graduating from Animal Control SERGEANT FLOYD H. MILES, JR. School. He is survived by his mother and father, wife, three stepsons, brothers, sister and grandson,” the spokesperson said. The man on the moped was taken to an area hospital for examination and observation. Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation. “When a police officer is killed, it’s not an agency that loses an officer, it’s an entire nation.” Chris Cosgriff, ODMP Founder 38 The Blues - July ‘24
