Imbarco di emigranti
[Archivio Centro Studi Emigrazione, Roma]
sull’emigrazione poteva funzionare come
generale nell’America Latina.
dell’emigrazione. Passando a considerare il
ventennio, il motivo per cui abbiamo
relativamente pochi film è perciò probabilmente
abbastanza preciso: il regime non
voleva trasmettere l’immagine dell’italiano
costretto ad emigrare all’estero, perché lesiva
dell’orgoglio nazionale e della reputazione dello
stesso regime. Negli anni Trenta, a parte alcuni
Emigrazione come Immagine
Italian cinema put the spotlight on
emigration, in particular on emigration
abroad, through a series of films made
during a century marked by various
migratory flows to Argentina, France and
then to the Netherlands, Germany and
Australia, providing us with a kind of
history of Italian emigration through movies.
However, at the same time, these films are
first and foremost testimonials to Italy’s focus
on the subject. They tell us how emigration
was to be represented in terms of its
influence on the Italian public, also
considering that many of these films were
shown abroad and thus were also seen by
emigrant communities. Therefore, the
problem not only concerns how cinema
represented emigration, but also how it
didn’t represent it, because the main points,
during certain periods, also involved silence,
censorship and omissions.
