L a m i g r a z i o n e g r a f i c a Fabrizio Cecchet
dalle esperienze e dalle mille
spesso ci fa sentire delusi dalle reali
The marketing of some food products, that
attempted at the beginning of the 1900s to
represent a “D.O.C.” Italian identity that
would be immediately recognised and
accepted by the emigrant clientele, became
the driving force behind an entire wave of
graphic art for creating the Mediterranean
look of products grown and packaged in the
United States: if the dozens of types of
Neapolitan-style macaroni produced in
electric macaroni factories at the beginning
of the 1900s never bathed in the sun of the
Mediterranean, there’s no doubt that today
the “Salami of Genoa” sold in New York
store windows has nothing to do with the
small town of Sant’Olcese. But in the era of
economic globalisation, this operation has
two meanings: a camel, a palm tree and a
woman in a “chador” are depicted on the
can of couscous in Italian supermarkets to
reassure the new immigrant that the product
comes from Maghreb and not Venice.
