The beginnings of “comic language” appear to
be inseparably linked to the history of the
emigration of both men and ideas from the Old
to the New World; a history of innovation
rooted in tradition and of linguistic, cultural,
aesthetic and even ethnic hybridization. The
large coloured sheets of the Sunday supplements,
a good fifty years prior to the advent of
television, that cost less than the cinema, were a
fantastic pastime, and especially for children,
and logically so. But not just for kids. In a
sector that basically lacked any type of
competition, this “cinema of the poor” brought
the entire family, adults and children, rich and
poor, around the printed sheet. Those paper
stories also acted as an elementary English book
for the masses, a large portion of which were
illiterate: adults and children became
“schoolmates”, learning while having fun, and
laughing at themselves; exciting forms and
colours were a feast for the eyes, while also
providing the opportunity to acquire a taste for
funny and clever narrative inventions.
