Vakhtang Imnaishvili Some Questions Linked with the Spelling of Double Vowels Summary The paper deals with the peculiarities linked with two or three adjacent identical vowels in nouns and verbs. In words introduced from foreign languages double vowels are mostly preserved, but they have no morphological function. When two or three identical vowels are found adjacent to one another in Georgian words, each vowel has its function and, according to the rule, none of them must be lost or merged. However, in spite of this, there are cases in the literary language when this rule is violated (daaxlova, saTvalebiT, SeerTebina, ubolo, mravalseriani, urarteli...). In contrast, there are also cases when unjustified, groundless doubling of vowels occurs in words (garantiaaa, viRaceebi, uumaRlesi, sulelooo...). This must have a psychological background. 60

Summary<br />

The paper deals with the peculiarities linked with two or three adjacent identical<br />

vowels in nouns and verbs. In words introduced from foreign languages double<br />

vowels are mostly preserved, but they have no morphological function. When two<br />

or three identical vowels are found adjacent to one another in Georgian words, each<br />

merged. However, in spite of this, there are cases in the literary language when this<br />

rule is violated (daaxlova, saTvalebiT, SeerTebina, ubolo, mravalseriani,<br />

occurs in words (garantiaaa, viRaceebi, uumaRlesi, sulelooo...). This must<br />

have a psychological background.<br />
