From the History of Old Georgian Philology
(The Role of the Kingdom of Antioch in the
Political and Cultural-Educational Processes of XI-XII cc.)
Summary
The article deals with the political and cultural preconditions preceding the
systematization of philological activity in the Antioch Georgian translation school.
It also discusses Medieval Latin chronicles connected with Antioch. It turned out
that the relationship with Antioch was not only of religious-educational nature but
also of great historical-political importance. On the basis of researches made by the
European scholars and the Latin sources created in Antioch, it is shown that in XI-
XII centuries Antioch played the mediating role between Georgia and Europe. The
article discusses Latin sources reflecting these relations:
1.The chronicle by Oliver, a scholastic from Keln, written after the Fifth Crusade.
2. The chronicle under the name of Bella Antiochena by Valterius, a Chancellor of
Roger from Antioch, a ruler of Antioch.
The article analyses the process of systematization of Old Georgian philological
activity on the basis of research results achieved by P. Halfter, K.P. Todt and
foreign language (Latin, Persian, Arabic) sources describing the history of the
Caucasus.
