The name “Paralimni” means “by the lake” since it is situated next to a lake<br />

(that dries up during the summer). It has been the administrative centre of<br />

Ammochostos (Famagusta) <strong>di</strong>strict since the Turkish invasion in 1974, when it<br />

became the temporary administrative, economic and cultural centre. It is also<br />

the <strong>di</strong>strict’s main shopping hub offering a big selection of shops.<br />

Protaras, the seaside resort of Paralimni, has been developed as a tourist<br />

resort in the last 20 years. It is well-known for its golden sandy beaches, safe<br />

and crystal clear waters, water sports activities and the hundreds of windm<strong>il</strong>ls<br />

in the sprawling fields. Some of the best beaches are Fig Tree Bay, Konnos<br />

Bay and Pernera Beach.<br />

Worth seeing are the many Byzantine and me<strong>di</strong>eval churches in the wider<br />

Paralimni area and in surroun<strong>di</strong>ng v<strong>il</strong>lages.<br />
