Thermal Baths into a church. Major works of the master were done in the area
where the actual transept is. Then Luigi Vanvitelli’s intervention was decisive in
order to recreate the architectonical unity that had been lost during the various
phases of construction.
Vanvitelli’s brilliant work gave an enormous value to the building, which was
formed through great ideas and by interventions of restoration over two centuries.
The 1896 wedding of the future Vittorio Emanuele III raised the church to the
seat for religious ceremonies, promoted by the Italian state, which it still holds.
Finally in 1920, Pope Benedict XV raised the status of the church to Basilica.
