A "curriculum vitae" is a record of the academic contributions that is intended to define the professional
life of a person. By that measure the professional life of Salvatore Venuta would be judged by any
academic jury as having enriched beyond measure the fields of science and medicine. Since earning his
degree as a physician "magna cum laude" and his doctorate degree in molecular biology he has
continuously enriched our understanding of the mysterious molecular mechanisms of cancer and utilized
that knowledge to relieve the burden of cancer especially for women with breast cancer. This alone is
worthy of the world's respect and admiration but it is only a glimpse of the contributions made by this
great man. His brilliance and productivity were accompanied by vision and leadership and perhaps it is
the latter that have had the greatest impact on the lives of others. He is that rare person with an intellect
that discerns the present reality and a spirit that defines a future. His passion for biomedical research has
been the energy to drive the development of a biotechnology program that will define the science of the
21 st century. His compassion for patients has been the strength required to create a medical center that will
deliver modern molecular medicine for the citizens of southern Italy. This is a man whose professional
achievements have enriched the lives of others and it is fitting that they be chronicled in this distinguished
compendium developed in his honor. Others, colleagues and students, will long profit from reading the
lessons contained here but this book's greatest and lasting value is that it honors "Il Magnifico" Professore
Salvatore Venuta a man whose entire life has been a lesson to others who hope to make a difference in the
