PREFACE
Perhaps not everyone knows that La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi is
in fact the theatrical adaptation of a novel, La Dame aux Camélias
(The Lady of the Camellias), written by Alexandre Dumas fils in
1848. Even fewer people know that both works of art were inspired
by the true story of the life of Alphonsine Rose Plessis, who died
from tuberculosis at just 23 years of age after having been Alexandre
Dumas fils’ lover.
