How, then, to counter the risks of an unconventional contemporary novel,
sure to be perceived as risqué by the majority of readers and with a main
female character whose immoral profession would make it difficult for her
to gain readers’ approval?
With his wit and intelligence, Dumas penned an excellent story filled
with events and plot twists and, above all, had the idea of imbuing
the main character with the sadness and melancholy needed to
rouse COMPASSION: the only feeling capable of lessening the protagonist’s
“sins” in order for Marguerite to be accepted.
