PREFACE
Perhaps not everyone knows that La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi is
in fact the theatrical adaptation of a novel, La Dame aux Camélias
(The Lady of the Camellias), written by Alexandre Dumas fils in
1848. Even fewer people know that both works of art were inspired
by the true story of the life of Alphonsine Rose Plessis, who died
from tuberculosis at just 23 years of age after having been Alexandre
Dumas fils’ lover.

inestimabile ricchezza economica.
Medeleine, 11 a Parigi.

CAMELLIA
Alphonsine Rose Plessis was born in a village in Normandy, where she
spent her childhood in severe poverty. Her father was an alcoholic, her
mother was no doubt more sophisticated and well-mannered but subject to
a violent husband, and her grandmother was a wholly unscrupulous prostitute.
Alphonsine, aged 13 and unable to read or write, fled to Paris. After various
jobs and mishaps, she met Agénor De Gramont, Duke of Gramont and future
diplomat under Napoleon III. The duke took Alphonsine under his wing,
introducing her to elite circles where she mixed with aristocrats, politicians,
intellectuals and artists, enabling her to accumulate significant wealth very
quickly.
To give herself a new aura of distinction, she changed her name to Marie
Duplessis.
And with this new name, they fell at her feet... and into her bed: Nestor
Roqueplan, Editor-in-chief of Le Figaro; Dr Veron, Director of the Paris
Opera; and, spellbound by her sophistication, the renowned pianist Franz
Liszt. She married Count Édouard de Perregaux, taking the noble title of
countess and had a genuine love affair with Alexandre Dumas fils.
At just 23 years of age, after years of suffering with the disease, Alphonsine
died of tuberculosis in 1847, at home, in bed at 11 Boulevard de la Madeleine
in Paris.

CAMELLIA
In September 1844, aged 20, Alexandre Dumas, son of the more famous
Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers, met Marie Duplessis
for the first time at the Théâtre des Variétés, thus beginning an almost yearlong
love affair.
He then ended the relationship, which had become too costly, due to jealousy
as well as financial reasons.
After Marie’s death, Alexandre realised that this could form the basis for a
semi-autobiographical novel, based on his experience of love and suffering,
and enriched with romantic details – this was a chance for him to make his
own name, beyond the shadow of his father’s fame.
It took him just a month to write La Dame aux Camélias, renaming the protagonists
of the story Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval.
Despite the reticence of the conservative bourgeois about the contemporary
nature of the story, for Alexandre it opened the doors to success.

Traviata.

In the audience on 2 February 1852, watching the premiere of La Dame aux
Camélias, was Giuseppe Verdi with his lover and future wife Giuseppina
Strepponi.
On the stage, the character of Marguerite Gautier – the Lady of the Camellias
– was brought to life.
The theatre was full, the public stunned and amazed by the story. At the end
of the play, the women had tears in their eyes, and everyone was overcome
with emotion. Through the endless applause, Verdi realised that the story
of Paris’ most famous Lorette was something monumental. And so the
character of Marguerite, a fallen woman, redeemed by a young man’s love
and destined to an untimely death, inspired him to compose an opera with
music that would portray and heighten the emotion of the story.
He appointed the librettist Francesco Piave to write an original and captivating
story in which the themes of love, sacrifice and death weave together
in tragedy.
The name of the young lover was transformed once again into Alfredo Germont
and the character of Marguerite Gautier became Violetta Valéry, the
fallen woman, La Traviata.

PERCHÉ LA TRAVIATA
CI È SEMPRE STATA
TRAMANDATA TRISTE E
MALINCONICA
MOLTO PIÙ
DI UNA SEMPLICE
CAMELIA
raffinate rinominate poi dai dandy contemporanei Demi-mondanes o Grandes
orizontales.
Dumas figlio, all’ora giovane ventitrenne, nella scrittura a getto de La Signora
Come ben riconoscibile agli

THE REASON BEHIND
THE SADNESS AND
MELANCHOLY
IN LA TRAVIATA
MUCH MORE
THAN A SIMPLE
CAMELLIA
Throughout various theatre and film portrayals, history has given us an image
of Marguerite and Violetta that appears entirely distorted compared to
the presumed nature of the real-life protagonist, Marie Duplessis (1824-
1847), who inspired both Alexandre Dumas with his novel La Dame aux
Camélias and, later on, Giuseppe Verdi with his opera La Traviata.
In order to understand the reason, we must take a look at the social ambience
of Paris in the mid-1800s.
Following the French Revolution of 1830, changes to the constitution meant
that the supremacy of the clergy and aristocracy gave way to the up-andcoming
middle and well-off classes. The entrance of the nouveau riche
into society meant that an increasing number of courtesans (a social evolution
of the lorettes parisiennes later tastefully renamed demi-mondaines
or grandes horizontales by contemporary dandies). Thus, belonging to the
Parisian demi-monde also meant being able to afford to maintain a courtesan,
albeit sharing her – therein lay the novelty – with aristocracy like counts
and dukes. And this represented a powerful status symbol for the emerging
classes.
The society of the time, however, remained conservative and classist. For
the so-called good society, as rakish as it was hypocritical, speaking openly
of courtesans or love affairs with famous (at times even high-ranking) people
was both dangerous and taboo.
Just 23 years old when he unhesitatingly wrote La Dame aux Camélias,
Dumas fils was well aware of the contemporary, as well as scandalous,
nature of his subject matter. Indeed, the novel was to take place during
the time when it was written, with characters that could be traced back to
actual people who were still alive, and barely disguised by fictional names.
The public could instantly recognise Marguerite as Marie Duplessis, who
had passed away just the year before. All of Paris was familiar with her story.

How, then, to counter the risks of an unconventional contemporary novel,
sure to be perceived as risqué by the majority of readers and with a main
female character whose immoral profession would make it difficult for her
to gain readers’ approval?
With his wit and intelligence, Dumas penned an excellent story filled
with events and plot twists and, above all, had the idea of imbuing
the main character with the sadness and melancholy needed to
rouse COMPASSION: the only feeling capable of lessening the protagonist’s
“sins” in order for Marguerite to be accepted.

Marie Duplessì e poi Violetta ne La Traviata.
E con lei il suo atto d’amore.

An act of love that marked the life of that girl, surname Plessì, born poor
and who from the lowest levels of her provincial existence goes on to live
in wealth in the highest levels of Paris society, redeeming herself from a
childhood full of difficulties and abuses, up to serious illness and premature
death.
That act of love was fatal for us.
To get to know it in depth we researched, read dozens and dozens of
pages of what had already been written about it and tried to understand
how true and how false what had already been documented was. We tried
hard to interpret what could have really happened where the source was
dubious and if the writer at the time had been in love with the protagonist,
like, for example, the author of her biography at the time. An informative and
interpretative piece of work based on the presumed true character of the
young protagonist.
It struck us like this, then illuminating writing and narrative-musical skills to
tell the incredible true story of Alphonsine Rose Plessì, aka Marie Duplessì
and then Violetta in La Traviata.
And with her her act of love.
