Come previsto, il maschio alfa tendeva ad accaparrarsi il cibo per primo e in maggiori quantità. Tuttavia, la politica sociale degli scimpanzé è complessa: se il maschio dominante avesse consumato tutto il cibo senza condividerlo con un maschio subordinato, ciò avrebbe generato tensioni all’interno del gruppo, dovuta alla percezione di un comportamento dispotico da parte del maschio alfa. L’esperimento ha rivelato che il maschio dominante, rispettando queste dinamiche, tendeva a non appropriarsi di tutto il cibo. Alle femmine, inoltre, lasciava una porzione di cibo maggiore rispetto al maschio non dominante, in virtù del loro ruolo potenziale di madri. Con i maschi subordinati condivideva meno, mantenendo l’equilibrio gerarchico. Il concetto quindi è che le interazioni sono complesse e fortemente influenzate dalle capacità cognitive e dal livello evolutivo della specie. A livello di specie invece? Anche a livello di specie il conflitto può trovare un equilibrio tra le parti, ad esempio nei casi di simbiosi. Spesso pensiamo alla simbiosi come a una relazione armoniosa, ma di solito è il risultato di un equilibrio in cui ogni parte persegue principalmente il proprio interesse: il fatto che le specie non si danneggino reciprocamente è un comportamento altrettanto egoistico che garantisce a entrambe le parti di mantenere attivo il rapporto continuando a trarne vantaggio. La risoluzione del conflitto in simbiosi è un esempio di come l’ottimizzazione degli interessi individuali possa portare a un beneficio reciproco. Quindi in fondo la simbiosi in natura qualcosa può insegnarci rispetto al conflitto... L’equilibrio che emerge nelle relazioni simbiotiche è affascinante perché ci fa rendere conto che, nonostante la nostra natura egoistica – una caratteristica intrinseca a tutti gli esseri viventi – è possibile trovare un equilibrio. Questo equilibrio non elimina l’egoismo, ma lo gestisce attraverso il compromesso. In natura osserviamo che anche organismi semplici e dal comportamento meccanico riescono a negoziare e a coesistere in maniera funzionale. Certo, non tutti gli esperimenti di simbiosi hanno successo, alcuni hanno fallito e noi non li vediamo. Questo è il livello di evoluzione che Darwin ha descritto, dove le variazioni sono registrate a livello dei geni e si diffondono o spariscono nelle popolazioni. Dall’altro lato, gli organismi non vivono isolati, ma in comunità dove interagiscono con altri organismi, con membri della stessa specie ma anche con l’ambiente inorganico. Queste interazioni possono influenzare l’evoluzione in modi che non sono direttamente codificati nei geni di un individuo, un livello oggi chiamato “epigenetico”. L’epigenetica e le relazioni simbiotiche stanno espandendo la nostra comprensione dell’adattamento evolutivo. C’è – giusto per restare in tema – una sorta di conflitto tra le teorie di Darwin, che enfatizzano la selezione naturale basata sulla variabilità genetica e l’adattamento dei singoli individui, e le idee di Lamarck, che proponevano l’adattamento come risultato di caratteristiche acquisite per rispondere alle necessità ambientali. Semplificando, potremmo dire che il modello evolutivo darwiniano ha al suo interno anche meccanismi di tipo lamarckiano: sebbene i meccanismi descritti da Darwin rimangano centrali, l’interazione con l’ambiente potrebbe avere un ruolo altrettanto significativo. 24
