Il tetto dell'Elba

THE ROOF OF ELBA
Over a thousand metres above sea
level, the peak of Monte Capanne
appears in the distance as you come
towards the Island of Elba.
To reach the summit of the mountain,
there is a cablecar that carries adventurers
up to the top in its open yellow
baskets, onto the terrace of Elba. The
impression is not only the panorama
on your arrival but all the journey up.
In a little over 15 minutes: it is breathtaking
with the profile of the island
clearly visible and the whole of the
Tuscan Archipelago suddenly beneath
your feet. Why have to choose between
holidays in the mountains or at the
sea? Elba offers both of these together.
All this is possible thanks to a structure
that is now an integral part of the
mountain. In fact, this year, the cablecar
is sixty years old! In recent years,
the so-called “basketway” has had
a complete renovation and for over
seven months of the year, it carries visitors
to the top of the island: “Coming
to the Island of Elba and not going up
Mount Capanne is like going to Paris
and not climbing up the Eiffel Tower”.
