We Ibleans have always used it. Certainly, even before<br />
Jesus was born. Anonymous stone-cutters dug two<br />
sarcophagi to preserve anonymous Ragusans’ eternal<br />
resting place two thousand three hundred years<br />
ago. Tombs excavated in two blocks taken from who<br />
knows what rocky outcrop in Contrada Tabuna, on the<br />
immediate southern outskirts of Ragusa.<br />
With its epicentre in Ragusa, all the towns in the area<br />
used the stone extracted from just three hundred<br />
hectares between the Irminio River valley and the main<br />
road to Mazzarelli, now Marina di Ragusa.<br />
The French painter Jean Houel visited this part of<br />
the island at the end of the 18th century. He stayed<br />
in Ragusa for several weeks. He visited the places<br />
where the brown, fragrant rock is extracted and wrote<br />
a few lines about it. We believe that those lines by<br />
the transalpine artist (author of the most beautiful<br />
gouaches of the time, with magnificent reproductions<br />
of the most beautiful places in Sicily) should be read<br />
by his compatriot Deodat de Dolomieu, someone who<br />
understood and described the qualities of mountains and<br />
minerals.<br />
In the churches of the ‘late Sicilian Baroque’ style, i.e.,<br />
those built after the tremendous earthquake of 9 and 11<br />
January 1693 and which convinced UNESCO to include<br />
as many as eight municipalities in south-eastern Sicily<br />
on the World Heritage List, i.e., the so-called ‘goods of<br />
humanity’, pietra torba is present in many expressions in<br />
those churches. The craft ones, such as foundations,<br />
floors, stairs, and steps. And artistic ones, such as<br />
statues, columns, capitals, holy water stoups, artistic<br />
staircases.<br />
It would be enough to cite just one example among<br />
many: the access staircase and balustrade connecting<br />
the church to Madonna Immacolata’s convent in Ragusa<br />
Ibla. A triumph of baroque in pitch-black form. And then<br />
there is an equally great artistic and architectural heritage<br />
in the form of houses and villas.<br />
The whole of south-eastern Sicily took advantage of this.<br />
In fact, that stone makes the floors, especially those<br />
inlaid with white rock and possibly Calatine ceramics,<br />
veritable masterpieces, incredible geometric plays that<br />
often captivate, hypnotise the visitor’s eye.<br />
That stone we call pietra torba is ancient, very ancient.<br />
Using it today is not only an elegant way of furnishing<br />
and enriching our homes, but an intelligent way of<br />
passing on ancient traditions and a never-ending sense<br />
of beauty.<br />

Laying<br />
Position the product according to the installation pattern decided. As natural stones, the individual tiles do not have a uniform colour, so we<br />
suggest at this stage to position them to obtain an optimal final result.<br />
Recommended adhesive: Kerakoll H40 Eco Flex or Mapei Keraflex or similar.<br />
Proceed by spreading a thin layer of adhesive using the notched trowel not exceeding 3 mm on the laying surface.<br />
Spread a layer of adhesive using the smooth squeegee over the entire raw face of the tile.<br />
Glue the tile to the surface.<br />
A professional installation requires perfect flatness between the tiles laid, whether they are small or large.<br />
Use self-levelling spacers to make the surface perfectly flat.<br />
Glue cleaning: Immediately remove any excess glue from the joints with a wet sponge and clean up any remaining glue in the joint. This would<br />
be visible from the outside and would not allow the stucco to penetrate between the stones.<br />

Cleaning grout: Remove grout from tile surface as soon as it starts to dry.<br />
WARNING: The pot life of the putty is approximately 80 minutes at 21°C, after complete mixing of the components. It should be noted that the<br />
pot life is subject to many variables, including the consistency of the grout mix and the surface and ambient temperature. High temperatures,<br />
for example, shorten the working time, while cold temperatures lengthen it.<br />

Warnings<br />
All materials must be stored under cover, protected from sun, rain and moisture until used on site.<br />
IMPORTANT: Check that there is sufficient material to complete the job. If not, order material from the same batch (same or similar production<br />
block).<br />
Open the packaging and check the good condition of the product. Do not install the stones if any damage is found or if the material does not<br />
comply. Notify your dealer in good time.<br />
No claims will be accepted once the product is installed.<br />
Rules and tricks<br />
Clean the stains as soon as possible.<br />
All our products, whether tables, kitchen tops, bathroom tops, washbasins, or shower trays receive three coats of acid-proof sealing<br />
treatment which delays the absorption of stains.<br />
For floor or wall coverings, make sure that the person who will install the material applies the same treatment.<br />
This will give a couple of extra hours to clean up a stain from wine, coffee or whatever else is spilt. If the stain is left too long, it will penetrate<br />
beyond the sealant and may leave a mark, which is why it is always best to remove it as quickly as possible.<br />
Avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia, bleach, acid and descaling agents, including ‘home remedies’ based on lemon, baking soda and the like. All<br />
you need is a neutral detergent, e.g., Marseille soap or similar.<br />
If the stone is constantly exposed to hard water, it is necessary to clean the surfaces frequently so that soap scum, limescale, etc. do not have<br />
a chance to spread and solidify.<br />
It is strongly recommended not to place hot objects such as kettles or pots directly on the stone as they may cause staining or alter the surface.<br />

Cleaning after laying<br />
Wash the installed surface with a specific neutral detergent (see recommended product sheet).<br />
Floors can be treated with a mono brush, wet vacuum, mop, and cloth. After thoroughly cleaning and wetting the surface, distribute the<br />
solution evenly.<br />
Using a single-disc machine with a non-abrasive disc or a mop with a cloth, clean vigorously. In the latter case, it is recommended to rinse the<br />
mop frequently in the washing solution. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, using a vacuum cleaner if necessary.<br />
Allow drying 24-48 hours (timeframe to be evaluated and possibly expanded according to actual site conditions).<br />
Final treatment:<br />
Once the installation is complete, apply a water-based oil-repellent product and a water-based anti-dirt product to protect both the stone and<br />
the joint (see recommended products). Follow the instructions on the packaging.<br />
To avoid possible dripping of the product to stain the material, it is recommended to always apply from the bottom upwards for vertical<br />
surfaces.<br />
Allow drying 24-48 hours before use.<br />
When the treatment is complete, cover the area with non-woven fabric and cardboard so that the surface remains protected during the<br />
remaining stages of the construction site. It is particularly important to use several layers of fabric for paving so that any possible breakage of<br />
the fabric due to workers’ continuous passage does not expose the stone to stains or damage.<br />
Daily cleaning and maintenance<br />
For routine maintenance of the surfaces always use neutral detergents (see recommended products sheet). Under no circumstances should<br />
aggressive products be used that can irreparably damage the surface of the stone (such as acids or anti-limescale products).<br />
Pay attention to the hardness of your water: the harder it is, the more the soaps’ cleansing power will decrease. Therefore, it is important to<br />
clean the surfaces more frequently to prevent limescale and mould formation.<br />
All sizes could have a difference of thickness +/- 1-2 mm between one and the other supply.<br />
