TheGaveaufamilywasadynastyofpiano
makers.TogetherwithErardandPleyelitwas
oneofthemostrenownedFrenchpianobrands.
ThefounderwasJosephGabrielGaveauwho,at
theageof23,openedhisownpianocompany
in1847afterhavinglearnedthesecretsofconstructioninvariousartisanshopsinParis.
Theconstructionofuprightpianosbeganinvery
modestconditions.MrJosephwasworkingon
theevolutionofthemechanicsandinparticular
ontheangleoftheescapementtogetherwiththe
applicationofthecoilspring.
With
Withtheseinnovativemodifications,thenew“Meccanica
Gaveau”wasadopted
bymanyothermanufacturersandwilsoon
establishitself.
Healsoworkedto
improvesoundreproductionwithanamplificationsystem
through
anoriginal"reflection"
system,aninnovationthat
ledhim towinnumerousprizes
intheeventsinAmsterdam,Antwerp,
Brusels.Alsoheobtainedthe"Crosofthe
LegionofHonor”andthe“GreatGoldMedal
”attheParisUniversalExhibitionin1889.
MonsieurGaveauforhisbusinesorganization
wantedtoguaranteetheworkersamodernsocial
conditionbybuildingaworking-clascityadjacent
tothefactory.Heguarantedeveryoneaccommodation,medicalcareandfreemedicines,earning
theadmirationofFrenchindustry.
In1893,tiredofhis70years,heleftthemanagementofhiscompanytohisthreesons
Eugene,EtienneandGabrielwhocontinued
until1909.
In1898thepianosfactoryreachedaconsiderablesizeoccupyinganareaof14,000square
meterswith350employeesandanannualproductionof800pianos.
ThesuccesoftheGaveaupianosreached
itspeakinthe1920s.Thenbegan
itsslowdeclineafterthe1930s
whenEtienne'ssonsbegan
toofercheaperpianos
onthemarketunderthe
GAM brandbutwithout
succes
succes.
In1960LaMaison
Gaveaudecidedto
mergewiththeErard
brandandthenwith
thePleyelbrandbutthe
problemscontinuedtoexist
untilthethreebigbrands
finishe
finishedfilingtheirbalance
sheetsin1965.
Until1994theywereproducedkeepingthe
originalbrandsbytheGermanShimmeland
thensoldtotheFrenchManifacturedePiano
whichdefinitivelystoppedproductionafew
yearslater.
ItwastheendofalongstoryforGaveau,
ErardandPleyelwhohavebeenamongthe

entirecabinetrests,fulybelongstothecategoryofartisticpianos,theArt
CasePianos.
Theconstructionofthismasterpiececertainlybeganin1899(theyear
ofthedeathofthefounderoftheMaisonGaveauJoseph
Gabriel)thinkingaboutthecreationofaunique
instrumentinoccasionoftheadventofthe
twentiethcenturyand“TheUniversalExhibitioninParis”in1900,wheretheMaison
Gaveauhadalargeexhibitionspace.

pianothathasbeenabridge
betweenthenineteenthand
