Stand inspiration
The inspiration is the Case Study
House number 16 by the architect
Craig Ellwood, built between 1952
and 1953 in Bel Air for the Case Study
House Program, a programme funded
by the US magazine Arts&Architecture
to respond to the post–war housing
boom with prototypes of modern,
easily reproducible and affordable
homes.
In the almost 500–square–metre
exhibition space, the search for
distinctive fabrics and colours is
meticulous while the choice of textured
surfaces counteracts the sterile mood
following the pandemic. Textiles,
objects and plants meticulously
researched complement functional
spaces with a styling approach that
creates a wunderkammer, a cabinet of
wonders. A living place both inside
and out – the heart of the design is the
welcoming outdoor space visible from
every room, where the half–shade
promises solace and contemplation.
The home conceived by Kristalia
and MD House is a small ecosystem
in which to live and interact, a place
to start out from and return to.
The simple yet structured design
consists of steel frames and modular
components that can be reused
with a view to sustainability and the
circular economy.

rivista statunitense Arts&Architecture
per rispondere al boom edilizio
postbellico con prototipi di case
moderne, facilmente riproducibili
e dai costi contenuti.
Nello spazio espositivo di quasi
500 metri quadri, la ricerca di tessuti
e colori identificativi è accurata,
mentre la scelta di superfici materiche
contrasta l’asetticità post–pandemica.
Tessili, oggetti e piante ricercati con
una cura straordinaria fanno da
corollario ad ambienti funzionali in uno
styling che diventa wunderkammer,
camera delle meraviglie.
Luogo vivo dentro e fuori – cuore
dell’architettura è l’accogliente spazio
dedicato all’outdoor visibile da ogni
stanza, dove la mezz’ombra promette
ristoro e contemplazione – la casa
di Kristalia e MD House è un
piccolo ecosistema in cui vivere
e dialogare, un luogo da cui partire
e a cui ritornare.
L’architettura, semplice ma strutturata,
è composta da telai in acciaio
e componenti modulari riutilizzabili
in un’ottica di sostenibilità
e di economia circolare.

The reverted black,
il nero rovesciato
«Despite myself, black and its
qualities have always bordered on
a mysticism”, faint or dark, such as to
continue to fascinate me — in a
perfect suspension. I “Affront”, or
rather, I confront myself again with
the theme of black after many years
spent in total chromophilia, which
I now accept as a present condition of
vital attitude. And even more so now,
in the company of lights and skies
and expressions of a Mexico that
gives of itself, flourishing, ecstatic and
supernatural. Black, blacks, pigments,
solidity, depth and also loquacious
shadows reach me, now at the point
of wanting to observe them and
compose a “reverted” world —
projected and consequential to the
architectures of living, object
of Kristalia’s production and its
primary study.
Solid and colourful semantics,
whose manifesto is directing itself
to adjectivising reference groups
— either not quite or perhaps even
totally impregnated with black. As if
the thoughts, at times dark, deep,
have emerged, subtle in representing,
at the end or at the beginning of the
process, a state of the true cheerful,
vivid and delighted, and with a lot of
lifeblood running through its veins.
Here then are tufts of dark black
Japanese grass, shiny like romantic
oriental hair, black or almost black
leaves that resonate as in a painting
by my beloved Henri Rousseau, and
the Fauves. Lights that are black but
bright, silhouettes that are quite
“sharp”, but vibrant and sinuous; little
secret compartments hidden under
display cases, a bit of love for
entomology, but also for the Gothic...
in short, I love the Addams Family,
perhaps the best representatives of
a relaxed, cheerful, sentimental black.
The black of the souls to be tuned,
as a depth that emerges and relates
in groups, no longer solitary. With
gouaches, sketches, drawings, small
photographs, memories and quotes
in black, but of black, at their core,
have the primitive and immense
gesture of ink and of the darkroom.
That generates life...
All of it in a renovated and oft—cited
steady house, or perhaps more a
house with veranda: a place that is
even more lively, inside and outside,
a great “shelter”, where the partial
shade allows refreshment and
contemplation of well—thought out
living objects, well—designed to
the point, and to the stroke…
So here we are, preparing ourselves
for the voyage that will bring us to
June 2022, with the desire to share,
among analogic and backlit,
seamlessly. Ever more, a manifesto,
despite myself…»

Hecho en Mexico

«Mio malgrado, il nero e le sue qualità
hanno da sempre sconfinato in un
“misticismo”, lieve od oscuro, tale da
continuare ad affascinarmi — in una
perfetta sospensione. “Affronto”, o
meglio, mi confronto di nuovo con il
tema del nero dopo molti anni passati
nella totale cromofilia, che ormai
accetto come presente condizione
di atteggiamento vitale. E ancora di
più adesso, in compagnia di luci e
cieli ed espressioni di un Messico
che si concede, floribundo, estatico
e supernaturale. Nero, neri, pigmenti,
solidità, spessore e anche ombre
loquaci che mi giungono, ora al punto
di volerli osservare e comporre in
un mondo “rovesciato”— reverted
— proiettato e consequenziale ad
architetture dell’abitare, oggetto
e studio principale della produzione
di Kristalia.
Una semantica solida e colorata, che
per manifesto si rivolge a gruppi di
riferimento aggettivanti — o forse
non proprio — totalmente impregnati
di nero. Come se i pensieri, a volte
oscuri, profondi, se ne fossero usciti,
lievi nel rappresentare, alla fine
o all’inizio del processo, uno stato
del vero allegro, vivido e compiaciuto,
e con parecchia linfa in corpo.
Ecco allora ciuffi di erba giapponese
corvina, lucida come capigliature
romantiche orientali, foglie nere
o quasi che risuonano come
in un dipinto del mio amato Henri
Rousseau, e i fauves. Luci nere
ma brillanti, silouhettes piuttosto
“sharp”, ma vibranti e sinuose; piccoli
segreti nascosti sotto teche, un
po’ di amore per l’entomologia, ma
anche per il gothic… Insomma, amo
la famiglia Addams, forse i migliori
rappresentanti di un nero rilassato,
allegro, sentimentale.
Il nero delle anime da accordare,
come profondità che esce e si
confronta in gruppo, non più solitario.
Con gouaches, sketches, disegni,
piccole fotografie, ricordi e citazioni
in nero ma che di nero, in fondo,
hanno il gesto primitivo ed immane
dell’inchiostro e della camera oscura.
Che genera vita…
Il tutto in una rinnovata e upercitata
steady house, o forse più una casa
con veranda: un luogo ancora più
vivo, di dentro e di fuori, un grande
“shelter”, dove la mezz’ombra
permette ristoro e contemplazione
verso oggetti del vivere pensati, ben
disegnati al punto, e al tratto…
Eccoci, preparandoci per il viaggio
che ci porterà al giugno 2022, con
voglia di condividere, tra analogico
e retroilluminato, senza soluzione
di continuità. Sempre di più,
un manifesto, mio malgrado»
