The intention of lhis book is to list all known Camel Zippo lighter images through 2002. However, if certain Ilghters do not appea' "
this guide it may be because 01 the;r similarity to other versions pictured or possibly an oversight by the author, which mar be
corrected in subsequent revisions. It should not be assumed the lighters excluded from this book have no collector value.
While the Camel lighters in this book appear to be in chronological order, they are also listed by similarity of design. The numberi-g
system under the lighter is based on the order the lighter appeared in this book. The purpose of the numbering system will De :0
effectively identify all Camel Zippo lighters. Since many of the lighters have similar names and imagery the numbers are an impona":
tool for future identification.
People from all over the world collect Camel Zippo lighters. They have been buying, selling and trading them for many years.Howeve',
it is difficult to accurately value a lighter that does not exist in sufficient quantities. A committee of people using experience ano ¡re
history 01 previous transactions created the values in this book.lt should be remembered that values are arbitrary and the true curree:
market value can only be determ;ned when a buyer actually pays and a seller actually sells an item. The listed values in this bOOK,
therelore, are based on what the lighter should bring in an average market. In the past few years, sensationalized auction prices have
tended to create huge swings in values. While certain lighters are indeed rare and valuable, Ihe majority of most Camel Zippo lighters
are quite affordable and readily available. This book should be a valuable resource for years to come. The values in this book shoo n
be used only as a guide. They are not intended to set prices, which vary from one sectlon of the world to another. Auction values, as
well as dealer prices vary greatly and are affected by condition, rarity, and demand. The author and contributors do not assume a"

Zippo has had a long relationship with the tobaceo industry sinee our early days. Zippo was founded in 1932 and just a few years
later the eompany produced lighters imprinted with the El Producto logo using a metallique, Zippo's lirst lorm 01 customization.
Later, speeiallighters were produeed for P. Lorillard tobaeeo eompany, imprinted with Old Gold and Kent eigarette package ads and
logos as well as lar Muriel Cigars in 1952.
Throughout the late 40's and '50's, Zippo produeed lighters as speeial orders with ads and logos for Chesterfield, Camels, Lueky
Strike, Vieeroy, and Holiday Mild eigarettes. In the '60's, lighters were engraved with an individual's name or handwritten signalure
as part 01 a Srown & Williamson Raleigh eoupon redemption programo From lhe 1960's through the 1990's; Zippo has made lighlers
whieh promoted sueh brands as Winslon, Kool, Salem, Meril, Vieeroy, Newport, Parliament, L& M, Senson & Hedges, Virginia Slim,
Marlboro, and, 01 eourse, Came!. Zippo began produeing imprinted Joe Camel and Camel Seast logo items as fullillmenl orders in 1992.
Early 1995, Zippo and R J Reynolds agreed on a licensing program to produce lighters imprinted with Camel ads and logos using
two unique processes:
Sublimation was used on three regular size lighters and one slim lighter for Camel Cash IV ealalog in 1993.The sublimation process
is eomplex. Eaeh purple malte powder coal lighter was covered with the unique sublimation linish on all surlaees ineluding the top,
bottom, sides, and hinge. A elear eoat was applied to the matle lighter and the proper paper transfer lor ea eh design was plaeed
over lhe lronl and sides 01 the lighter The paper transler was sprayed with a chemieal then the lighler was plaeed in an oven with
specilie time, temperature, and pressure applied. This process was repeated on the reverse sides 01 the lighter Due to special
handling needed to ereate the sublimation process, Zippo does not plan to use the process again. Joe Camel lighters produeed
using sublimation are illustrated on page 11.
Technigraphics is the second 01 the unique processes. lt is a curren! imprinting process.lt begins with steel chips that have been
copper coated. The chips are then sprayed with a gloss white. Meanwhile, the graphic image lar the lighter is created and
reproduced as a mirror image on a transler sheet. The transfer sheet is placed over a board 01 chips and topped with a silicone pad.
The board is plaeed in an oven wilh specifie time, temperature, and pressure lar the image transferOnce cured, the technigraphie
chips are now ready to be applied to the lop and bottom surfaee 01 the lighter The firsl Camellighler produeed using teehnigraphics
is shown on page 9.
The colleetibility of the Zippo lighter has greatly increased within lhe past ten years. Among the most popular are lighters imprinted
with tobaeeo eompany and eigarette advertising logos. The illustrations and descriptions of the wide variety of lighters shown in this
book are a great source 01 inlormation to the Zippo collectors. Many early tobacco theme lighters are displayed at the Zippo/Case

As with most collectibles, the date of manufacture
of a Zippo lighter often affects its value. Valuable
information on the bottom of every Zippo lighter
can help you determine its date of manufacture.
Most lighters fabricated between 1933 and 1957
can be identified by style and model and the patent
or patent-pending marks.
Starting in the mid 50's date codes were stamped
on the bottom. The original purpose was for quality
control. The date codes have since become an
invaluable tool for Zippo collectors.
The appearance of the word "Zippo" in the bottom
stamp provides another clue to dating. There have
been three major changes, as shown below.
From 1933 to the mid 50's the word Zippo was
stamped in block letters.

Zippo records indicate an overlap of bottom
stamp configurations from 1949-1957. Also
some lighters produced between 1955-57 were
date coded, however, specifics remain unclear.
The Zippo script logo was developed in the late
40's and was phased-in on the lighter bottom
stamp around 1955.

trademark instead of being removed from the right;

In the late 70's the logo was redesigned. It was
incorporated into the bottom stamp in 1980.
