Benvenuti
nelle Valli Grana e Maira
oggi valorizzati in piccoli musei.

All’inizio degli
anni trenta,
anche in risposta al fervore fortificatorio
francese dove era in costruzione la
Linea Maginot delle Alpi, venne iniziato
un intervento sistematico di difesa delle
frontiere, denominato “Vallo Alpino del
Littorio”, adottando però opere più piccole
e meno dispendiose di quelle francesi,
ma molto più numerose e meglio
distribuite sul territorio.
Questi “centri di fuoco” ricavati all’interno
sotterranei spesso umidi e malamente
riscaldati collegati con angusti cunicoli
alle casamatte armate.

The works on the construction of the Alpine Wall in the Maira Valley began
relatively late compared to other Alpine valleys, and only in 1936 could the
first construction sites be opened to build the necessary road network to
support the fortified line that, within a few years, extended 60 kilometres,
connecting the town of Acceglio with the main defensive strongholds.
The first line of resistance was built very close to the frontier line and was
intended to block also the access through the easier passes through
Ubayette and Colle Bellino, in addition to the main valley, so as to avoid
breaches from the North. The most important passes were thus protected
by a series of fortifications consisting mainly of small and medium
constructions, mostly armed with machine guns and essentially designed
for a flanking action.
in valle Maira
iniziarono relativamente tardi rispetto

I principali nuclei difensivi
in valle Maira
The main defensive points in Val Maira comprised the
strongholds of Colle Bellino (with other centres located along
the Traversiera ridge up to the Lauset Pass), of Ponte della Fea
(blocking the main valley upstream of Chiappera), of the
Sautron Pass, of the Cavalla-Munie sector, and of the Scaletta
pass. Rearward resistance points, almost twice as many in the
second lines as compared to the first line, were posted at the
Gardetta Pass, at the Rocca Brancia Pass, and at Prato Ciorliero.
The main valley was blocked by a second line downstream of
Acceglio (armed with anti-tank pieces and having the task of
blocking the Unerzio valley) and by a third line at Ponte della
Cheina (consisting of two centres in the cave).

A doubling of the first line, reinforcing
the barricade of Fea, should have been
built near Ponte Maira, where works
began on two large underground
centres (type 15,000), was suspended
in 1942 and never completed.
By 1940, however, most of the
defensive system was completed
and operational: the first line was
already tactically efficient
and completed in the Munie, Sautron,
Maurin, Viviere, Ponte Maira,
Traversiera and Bellino areas,
while the second line (the Acceglio
barricade) and the third line
(the Cheina Bridge barricade) were
considered complete and operational.
Munie, Sautron, Maurin, Viviere, Ponte
Maria, Traversiera et Bellino, alors que
la deuxième ligne (barrage de Acceglio)
et la troisième (barrage de Ponte
Cheina) étaient considérées comme
achevées et opérationnelles.
Eine Verdoppelung der ersten Linie zur
Verstärkung der Sperre von Fea hatte bei
Ponte Maira entstehen sollen, wo mit den
Arbeiten zu zwei großen unterirdischen
Anlagen (für etwa 15000 Soldaten)
begonnen wurde, die jedoch 1942
abgebrochen und nie beendet wurden.
Nichtsdestotrotz war der Großteil der
Verteidigungsanlagen 1940 fertig gestellt
und einsatzbereit: Die erste Linie war in
taktischer Hinsicht bereits funktionsfähig
und stand kurz in den Zonen Munie,
Sautron, Maurin, Viviere, Ponte Maira,
Traversiera und Bellino vor ihrer
Vollendung, während die zweite Linie
(Sperre von Acceglio) und die dritte (Sperre
der Ponte Cheina) als vollständig und
einsatzbereit angesehen wurden.
Un raddoppio
della prima linea,
di rinforzo allo sbarramento della Fea,
avrebbe dovuto sorgere presso Ponte Maira
centri sotterranei (tipo 15000) sospesi
nel 1942 e mai portati a termine.
Nonostante tutto, nel 1940 gran parte
del dispositivo difensivo era ultimato
e operativo: la prima linea era già
tatticamente efficiente e in corso di
completamento nelle zone Munie, Sautron,
Maurin, Viviere, Ponte Maira, Traversiera
e Bellino, mentre la seconda linea
(sbarramento di Acceglio)
e la terza (sbarramento di Ponte Cheina)
erano considerate complete e operative.

Le prime realizzazioni
dei Vallo Alpino
erano caratterizzate da un uso cospicuo
installazioni in acciaio come casematte
per artiglieria, cupole per osservatori
e armi automatiche soprattutto in zone
particolarmente esposte al fuoco nemico
che richiedevano maggiore protezione
e migliore defilamento.
strutture difensive.
The first constructions of the
Alpine Wall were characterised by a
conspicuous use of steel installations
such as casemates for artillery,
domes for observatories and automatic
weapons, especially in areas
particularly exposed to enemy fire that
required greater protection and better
defilade. Over the years, iron shortages
led to an increase in concrete
constructions at the expense
of the increasingly rare steel,
which led to the development
of gigantic structures with huge
protective walls and huge loopholes
that resembled ancient medieval
castles rather than modern defensive
structures.
was die Entwicklung gigantischer
Konstruktionen mit sehr dicken
Schutzmauern und enormen
Schießscharten bedeutete, die eher an
mittelalterliche Burgen als an moderne
Verteidigungsanlagen erinnerten.

At the end of the 1930s, in order to give depth to the defensive
lines already completed and to cover the areas not yet protected
by fortifications, such as secondary valleys and Alpine passes
of lesser importance, it was decided to build a large number
of small installations, called “Opere 7000”, consisting of a concrete
monoblock resistant to small or medium calibres and protected by
a complex camouflage. In reality, the small size and poor quality
of the materials used often made it practically impossible to carry
out an articulated defence based on this type of construction
which, however, built quickly in sequence, spread throughout
the Alps, allowing the completion of numerous fortified
strongholds and many doubling lines along the main valleys.
