At Città di Castello, the seat of the Fondazione Burri, the events to
mark the centenary of Alberto Burri’s birth were officially opened in
solemn fashion on March 12, 2015. The ceremony was attended by
numerous representatives of national and foreign institutions, artists
and journalists, many of whom were unable to find room in the large
reception hall. However, suitable facilities were provided for the remaining
hundred or so people in other rooms of the City Hall and in
the large square in front of it.
The commemoration was conducted by the president of the foundation,
Bruno Corà, who among other things listed the cities and other
places that are playing an official part in the celebrations, including the
city of Pistoia. Two natives of Pistoia were present: Aurelio Amendola,
Burri’s official photographer, and myself, his old friend and admirer.
GROTTAROSSA – My first meeting with Alberto Burri took place
in the early sixties, at his home and studio in Grottarossa, Rome, with
the painter Rinaldo Burattin, the journalist and photographer Luciano
Magnini and my son Fabio. Magnini did not fail to bring out his
Hasselblad and use it repeatedly, something which struck the artist’s
wife, Signora Minsa. Calling me aside, she expressed her surprise at
seeing her husband let himself be photographed in the studio, something
which up until that moment had been strictly forbidden. That
concession was not destined to remain isolated: it was followed, in fact,
by many others over the long and uninterrupted course of our association,
characterized by numerous episodes that have now become
cherished memories.

Centenario della nascita di Alberto Burri. Erano presenti numerosi rappresentanti
di istituzioni nazionali ed estere, artisti e giornalisti molti
dei quali non hanno potuto trovare spazio nel grande salone municipale.
Tuttavia adeguati impianti hanno soddisfatto le restanti centinaia di
presenze che hanno sostato sia in altre sale comunali, sia nella grande
piazza prospicente il Municipio.
La commemorazione è stata diretta dal Presidente della Fondazione,
Bruno Corà, che tra l’altro ha menzionato l’elenco delle città e dei
luoghi che partecipano ufficialmente alle manifestazioni, tra questi la
Città di Pistoia. Erano presenti due pistoiesi: Aurelio Amendola, fotografo
ufficiale del Maestro e il sottoscritto in qualità di antico amico ed
estimatore.
GROTTAROSSA – Il mio primo incontro con Alberto Burri è avvenuto
nei primi anni Sessanta, nel suo studio-abitazione di Grottarossa
- Roma, con il pittore Rinaldo Burattin, il giornalista e fotografo Luciano
Magnini e mio figlio Fabio. Magnini non mancò di utilizzare ripetutamente
la sua Hasselblad, cosa che colpì la moglie del Maestro,
signora Minsa, la quale chiamandomi in disparte, mi fece rilevare la sua
sorpresa nell’assistere al marito che si lasciava fotografare all’interno
dello studio, cosa fino a quel momento restata rigorosamente vietata
a chiunque. Quella concessione, era destinata a non rimanere isolata
ne seguirono infatti molte altre durante tutto il lungo e ininterrotto
periodo del nostro sodalizio, caratterizzato da così numerosi episodi,
trasformati oggi in carissimi ricordi.
