asked you to do it?
AA: Yes he did; this was a failing on my part. In that period I was busy
with Michelangelo, and then I always put it off because of other commitments.
It has been a source of great regret for me. Recently, though,
something wonderful happened: two young film directors from Palermo
contacted me and asked me to collaborate with them in making a video
on Burri. When they came to me to shoot the video, I confided to them
I had never photographed the Cretto at Gibellina. They suggested we
go there together: they would film me while I took pictures. I went,
but only to see the biggest work Burri ever created [one of the largest
examples of Land Art in the world, editor’s note].
I found the Cretto in a pitiful state and without mincing my words I told
them: “And how are we going to shoot with all these weeds that have
taken it over?”
The day after I was invited to go and see the president of the Fondazione
Orestiadi, the Hon. Corrao [Ludovico, editor’s note] and expressed my
desire to photograph Burri’s work, but not under those conditions. He
wanted to know who had given me the commission, and I replied that
it was a promise I had made to the artist himself. A short time later I
heard on the news of Corrao’s violent death. I was shocked!
It seemed that fate wanted in some way to prevent me from honoring
my debt. Later I was informed that the senator had already arranged
for the work to be cleaned and that everything was now in order.
I’m very satisfied with my pictures and with having kept the promise
I made to Burri!

AA: Certo che me lo chiese; questa è stata una mia mancanza. In quel
periodo ero impegnato su Michelangelo, poi ho sempre rimandato per
impegni improrogabili. Per questo ho provato un grande rimpianto. Di
recente però è successa una cosa meravigliosa: mi hanno contattato due
giovani registi palermitani e hanno chiesto la mia collaborazione per
realizzare un video su Burri. Quando son venuti da me a girare, ho confidato
loro di non aver mai fotografato il “Cretto” a Gibellina. Mi hanno
proposto di andare insieme: mi avrebbero ripreso mentre fotografavo.
Sono andato, ma solo per vedere l’opera più grande che Burri abbia mai
creato [una delle opere di Land Art più estese al mondo, n.d.r.].
Ho trovato il “Cretto” in condizioni penose e senza mezzi termini ho
detto loro: “E come si fa a fare riprese con tutte queste erbacce che
l’hanno invaso?”
Il giorno dopo sono stato invitato dal presidente della Fondazione Orestiadi,
On. Corrao [Ludovico] e gli espressi il desiderio di fotografare
l’opera di Burri, ma non in quelle condizioni. Voleva conoscere la committenza
del mio incarico, risposi che era un impegno preso con il Maestro.
Poco tempo dopo appresi dal telegiornale della morte violenta di
Corrao. La cosa mi sconvolse!
Sembrava che il destino volesse in qualche modo impedirmi di onorare
il mio debito. In seguito mi comunicarono che il senatore aveva già
predisposto perché l’opera venisse pulita e che ormai era tutto a posto.
Sono molto soddisfatto dei miei scatti e di aver tenuto fede alla promessa
fatta a Burri!
