Anyone taking the Via Montalese that runs through the hills from
Pistoia to the village of Santomato will be surprised to suddenly come
across—in the area right in front of the entrance to Villa Celle—Alberto
Burri’s Celle Big Iron [Grande Ferro Celle], placed there in 1986 at the
express desire of the artist himself. The work, made of iron and painted
red, is of considerable size (5,25 x 5,90 m) and one of the very few sculptures
by the artist from Città di Castello to be located in the open air.
With vertebra that make it look like the skeleton of an airship, the Big
Iron has the same airy lightness, while emphasizing the solidity of a
structure obtained by linking two triangles together with curved “ribs”
that enclose its volume. The flat profiles of the pieces of iron chosen
and shaped by Burri accentuate the sharp-edged and hollow character
of the solid, which has the power to evoke one of the figures drawn by
Leonardo for Luca Pacioli’s De Divina Proportione (1492). As elastic as
a sail filled with wind, the work Celle Big Iron (1986) offers glimpses
through its open spaces of the surrounding greenery, the fencing of the
nearby vegetable gardens and the large pillars of the gateway to the
villa which for years has hosted Giuliano Gori’s extensive collection of
environmental art.
This exhibition, which on the centenary of Burri’s birth celebrates the
artist’s relationship with the city of Pistoia, offers an extraordinary photographic
image of this important sculptural creation taken by Aurelio
Amendola, responsible for the most successful pictures of the great
artist from Città di Castello and his works.

A chi percorresse la via Montalese che da Pistoia si snoda attraverso
le colline e reca al borgo di Santomato, sarebbe riservata la sorpresa
– proprio nell’aria antistante l’ingresso di Villa Celle – di trovarsi d’improvviso
al cospetto del Grande Ferro Celle, 1986 di Alberto Burri, là
collocato per desiderio dell’artista stesso. L’opera, in ferro dipinto di
color rosso, dalle considerevoli dimensioni (5,25 x 5,90 m) è una delle
pochissime sculture dell’artista tifernate situata en plein air.
Vertebrata come lo scheletro di un dirigibile il Grande Ferro ne condivide
l’ariosa leggerezza, ponendo tuttavia in risalto la salda strutturazione
ottenuta mediante due triangoli collegati tra loro da ‘costole’
curve che ne conchiudono la volumetria. I piatti profili del ferro prescelto
e dimensionato da Burri accentuano la dimensione tagliente e
vacua del solido che ha la forza di evocare una delle figure disegnate
da Leonardo per il De Divina Proportione di Luca Pacioli (1492). Elastica
come una vela gonfiata dal vento, l’opera Grande Ferro Celle, 1986 lascia
intravedere attraverso la sua aperta spazialità il verde circostante,
la recinzione degli orti limitrofi e il grande portale d’ingresso alla villa
ove da anni risiede la grande collezione d’arte ambientale ordinata da
Giuliano Gori.
Di questa importante creazione plastica di Burri, la mostra, che nel
Centenario della nascita celebra la relazione avuta dall’artista con la città
di Pistoia, fornisce una straordinaria immagine fotografica dovuta ad
Aurelio Amendola, artefice peraltro delle più riuscite pose del grande
artista di Città di Castello e delle sue opere.
Nel visitare così l’esposizione di un nucleo di opere di Burri concesse
in prestito dalla Collezione Gori e di un repertorio considerevole di
stampe di Amendola, riuniti per l’evento promosso dalla Fondazione
