Burri e Pistoia

I answered that I had met Burri and had taken his portrait while he was
making one of his “combustions.” Marino said: “He is ten years ahead
of all the others!” I told this at once to Burri, who was very touched
by these words: they had been pronounced by Marini, one of the few
artists he admired!
CS: After Marino Marini, which other artists did you work with before getting
to know Burri?
AA: I went to America to photograph Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
CS: Figures of great standing, it can’t have been easy dealing with them!
AA: In 1976 one of my friends in New York called Warhol and
Lichtenstein to tell them that Marino Marini’s photographer would
like to meet them in their studios, to take pictures. This was the key
that got me a gracious reception straightaway.
CS: They were two very different artists. How did your first meeting with each
of them go? I presume you speak English!
AA: No, I only speak Pistoiese! The fact that we didn’t speak the same
language certainly didn’t help us to reach an understanding. Warhol
was very aloof and detached, although polite and very punctual. He
gave me just an hour to photograph him: this had never happened to
me, I felt like a housemaid or a cleaning woman! The positive side was
that he left me carte blanche on the shots.
Lichtenstein was very friendly and above all placed no time limits on
my work. I met him later at the Venice Biennale and at the Fattoria di
Celle, at Giuliano Gori’s home. In both cases it was a real pleasure to
see him again.
CS: And how and when did you meet Burri?
AA: I had wanted to meet him for some time, but the general opinion
“combustione”. Marino disse: “Lui è in anticipo di dieci anni rispetto
a tutti gli altri!”. Lo raccontai subito a Burri che si emozionò molto per
questa frase: era stato Marini, uno dei pochi artisti che godeva della sua
stima, a pronunciarla!
CS: Dopo Marino Marini, con quali artisti hai collaborato prima di conoscere
Burri?
AA: Sono andato in America a fotografare Andy Warhol e Roy Lichtenstein.
CS: Personaggi di grande livello, non doveva essere facile avvicinarli!
AA: Nel 1976 uno dei miei amici di New York, telefonò a Warhol e
Lichtenstein dicendo loro che il fotografo di Marino Marini avrebbe
avuto piacere di incontrarli nei loro atelier, per scattare delle foto. Questo
fu il passe-partout per essere subito accolto benevolmente.
CS: Si tratta di due artisti molto diversi, com’è stata la prima volta con ognuno
di loro? Presuppongo che tu parli inglese!
AA: No, parlo solo il pistoiese! Sicuramente il fatto di non parlare la
stessa lingua, non facilitò l’instaurarsi di un rapporto umano. Warhol
fu molto freddo e distaccato, anche se cortese e molto puntuale. Mi
concesse solo un’ora per fotografarlo: questo non mi era mai capitato,
mi sentii alla stregua di un cameriere o di una donna delle pulizie! L’aspetto
positivo fu che mi lasciò carta bianca sulle inquadrature.
Lichtenstein fu cordialissimo e soprattutto non mise limiti orari al mio
lavoro. Lo incontrai in seguito alla Biennale di Venezia e a Fattoria di
Celle, a casa di Giuliano Gori, in entrambi i casi fu davvero molto piacevole
ritrovarsi.
CS: …e Burri quando e come l’hai incontrato?
AA: Da tempo avevo desiderio di incontrare il Maestro, ma era opinio-
