L’AMICIZIA PRIMA DI TUTTO
chiara sarteanesi intervista aurelio amendola
“Aurelio Amendola’s career as a photographer of art began in 1968 when the
art critic and expert on 14th-century sculpture Gian Lorenzo Mellini commissioned
him to photograph Giovanni Pisano’s pulpit in Pistoia. His work
caught the attention of Marino Marini, who asked Amendola to take the pictures
for his monograph of 1973. Other commissions followed.
“His association with the Fonderia Michelucci, the foundry owned by the
brother of the famous architect Giovanni Michelucci, was a very important
chapter in the photographer’s career. It was there at the end of the sixties that,
among the artists engaged in the creation of sculptures for Michelucci’s church of
San Giovanni Battista, he got to know Jorio Vivarelli, whose works he photographed,
and Pericle Fazzini, who invited him to Rome to document his Risen
Christ, sculpted for Nervi’s Audience Hall in the Vatican.”
Chiara Sarteanesi: You have photographed the sculptures of Pisano, Jacopo
della Quercia, Donatello and Michelangelo, medieval works of architecture and
examples of industrial archeology and you have also worked for living artists:
all notable and demanding undertakings, but with different implications.
Aurelio Amendola: In the case of Michelangelo or Pisano, I felt free to
do what I sensibility suggested: no one could approve or disapprove.
Among living artists, some gave me carte blanche while others, like
Burri, caused me quite a few difficulties. You know what a perfectionist
he was. On the other hand, it is very interesting to work with someone
who knows what he wants!
On the subject of Burri, as it is about him that we want to talk, I’ll tell
you a story that made a great impression on me. In 1978 I was at Forte
dei Marmi with Marini, who asked me what I was doing in that period.
