Lorraine in Florence out of the clutches of the French by moving it temporarily to Palermo. 203
In the meantime, on October 20, 1801, Francesco had married, at the age of thirty-nine, the
noble and much younger Laura Sozzifanti. 204
It is plausible that it was Francesco, on the occasion of his wedding—as was a common
practice among aristocratic families in order to celebrate the marriage and leave a lasting
memento of it—who had the allegory of Conjugal Fidelity painted on the bedroom ceiling
(figs. 71-77). 205
A less likely possibility is that the painting was commissioned for the marriage of Francesco’s
son, Gerolamo Alessandro Junior, to the wealthy noblewoman Luisa Magnani, which took
place shortly after her emancipation by her father, on September 27, 1823. 206 At the time the
family situation was different, as were the characters and ways of thinking of the people
involved, but different too was the artistic climate of the moment.
Moreover it is inconceivable that Francesco dei Rossi had not wished to adorn that room
with evocative images on the occasion of his marriage: the first in his line of the family for
more than half a century. 207 In addition, that allegory was an integral part of a subtle program
of psychological conditioning exercised by the husband on his young wife.
The room still has all the special characteristics that Francesco chose to bestow on it,
probably at the end of the renovation he had commenced around 1794-95 in the apartment
he occupied, the one that used to belong to his parents. Before he married the bedroom—as
his brother Tommaso tells us—was conveniently equipped with an adjoining toilette, along
with the nearby small room for the maid and the wardrobe; the main room had been stripped
of the previous late-baroque decorations, in accordance with the new fashion of the time. 208
However our informer had, probably not noticed an original characteristic that distinguished
that room from all the others in the building: the almost cubical space, covered by a modified
vault, has in fact been treated in such a way as to round off the edge and corners between
the walls and between them and the ceiling. Only a raised molding in white stucco—perhaps
