opere strutturali e l’ing.
The palazzo we are in has a ancient history. It was erected around the mid eighteenth century in Canto de’
Rossi where this noble family had lived since medieval times, on an area in which archaeological excavations
brought to light remains from various ages, back as far as late Roman findings from the 3rd-4th century A.D.
In 1748, Father Raffaello Ulivi, an engineer from Pistoia, began the project for Palazzo de’ Rossi, built
between 1749 and 1760. Francesco Maria Boniforti was responsible for the second part of the works between
1774 and 1780… and other works were executed until 1812.
The “Libro della Fabbrica” by the clergyman Tommaso de’ Rossi gives an accurate report of such events,
on whose basis the history of the palazzo is masterfully reconstructed by Lucia Gai and published in issue
no. 12 of the magazine “Storia Locale”.
The palazzo, whose architecture is clearly eighteenth century style, was decorated by a series of painters from
the 18th and 19th century, including Luigi Rafanelli in the hall, Bartolomeo Valiani, Ferdinando Marini,
Nicola Monti and Giuseppe Belloli. Careful restoration has shed new light on their paintings and to all the
decorative features, the mouldings and stucco work, with several extraordinary findings such as the landscapes
that appeared in one of the rooms on the first floor, some of which seem to prefigure certain paintings
by Bugiani.
I have mentioned different names of architects and painters from the past 250 years.
I must add others, since every building is a collective work in which a large quantity of people take part,
and of these at least three should be remembered: the client, the architect and the builder.
The client is the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia; an enlightened, involved and discerning
client in the persons of its president Ivano Paci and director Umberto Guiducci.
The architect is Adolfo Natalini (speaking) and Marco Matteini with Mario Bechi, engineer, for the structural
work and Alessandro Lelli, engineer, for the installations. Marco Matteini was the supervisor of works.
The builder is the company Zetagi, belonging to surveyor Guido Zarri, which, with Diddi, Iconos and
Illuminotecnica, carried out the work over the three years of renovations under the supervision and
guidelines of the Archaeology and Monuments Superintendences.
Of course, wandering around the rooms, much of these works are invisible, since architecture and particularly
restoration are like an iceberg: only the tip can be seen. The consolidation and upgrading to make
the building anti-seismic and safe, the installations to make it comfortable and suitable for new uses, are
all invisible...as are the hands of the restorers of the paintings and decorative features.
The palazzo appears in its architecture and decorations as it was in its time of great splendour...of course
the furnishings make it suitable for its new use and tell us that something has changed: no longer a noble
residence, which was later used for a range of activities (offices, shops, newspaper headquarters and
dancing school), but the premises of a Fondazione, with offices and meeting rooms, as well as exhibition
spaces, spaces for associations and for music: this splendid hall where the musical activity launched by the
clergyman Lapini-Don Mario for those of my age still continues.
The palazzo, renovated from its basements right up to its splendid loggia and belvedere overlooking
Pistoia, is now ready for its new life.
The Fondazione has restored it to its original splendour and has given it back to the city.
Now, the large statue of Grandonio, nume tutelare of the de’ Rossi family, from his aedicule in the large
courtyard, can behold the palazzo with pride and hope that its life continues peacefully and productively.
And this is what I hope for too, thanking all those who have made it possible.
