Ferdinando Marini, Nicola Monti e Giuseppe Belloli.
ARCHITERTURE AND RESTORATION
1. The renovated Palazzo
The palazzo has an ancient history. It was erected around the mid eighteenth century
in Canto de’ Rossi where this noble family had lived since medieval times, on an area in
which archaeological excavations brought to light remains from various ages, back as far
as late Roman findings from the 3rd-4th century A.D.
In 1748, Father Raffaello Ulivi, an engineer from Pistoia, began the project for Palazzo
de’ Rossi, built between 1749 and 1760, by incorporating the tower houses already
belonging to the family. Later, Francesco Maria Boniforti would be responsible for the
second part of the works carried out between 1774 and 1780, and other works would be
subsequently executed until 1812.
The “Libro della Fabbrica” by the clergyman Tommaso de’ Rossi gives an accurate report
of such events, on whose basis the history of the palazzo is masterfully reconstructed by
Lucia Gai in this volume.
The palazzo, whose architecture is clearly eighteenth century style, was decorated by
a series of painters from the 18th and 19 th century, including Luigi Rafanelli in the hall,
Bartolomeo Valiani, Ferdinando Marini, Nicola Monti and Giuseppe Belloli. Careful restoration
has shed new light on their paintings and to all the decorative features, the
mouldings and the stucco work, with several extraordinary findings such as the landscapes
that appeared in one of the rooms on the first floor, hitherto completely covered
by layers of paint.
