L’edizione rilegata in pergamena, acquistata
The Pranks is a series of 31 copperplate engravings made by Chiappelli beginning in January 1928
and continuing until his death. The parchment-bound edition purchased by the Fondazione Caript
was printed in Florence in February 1936 and contains the first 24 Pranks carried out between 1928
and 1936. Chiappelli used the Tuscan term sguerguenza to indicate “malicious conduct or some
kind of a prank”, to create a series of bitingly ironic and paradoxical satires that took aim at vices
and human miseries, ambitions and moral decay, bourgeois rituals, religion, philosophy, love, and
death. This is in the tradition of the Capricci of Francisco Goya and G. B. Tiepolo. Chiappelli’s succinct
mark displays great linear clarity, in which irony often encroaches grotesquely on the tragic
and at other times on the macabre. The artist’s polemical intention was to use the copper plate
to tell a “caustic and satirical [story], in a rapid, tense and concise work” in which the imagination
transformed “the real into facts and into deeds of poetic quality” (Le incisioni di Francesco
Chiappelli 1965, p. 12). The first Pranks were exhibited at the 16th Venice Biennale in 1928; others
were shown at the exhibition organized by Giuseppe Lanza del Vasto at Berlin’s Porza exhibition
rooms in 1931.
