sui giornali e sulle riviste dell’epoca
(sisi 1980, pp. 137-138; cfr. salvi 2004). Nei
of the Wheat (p. 220), painted for the
Palazzo delle Corporazioni and therefore
an example of a public commission. Meanwhile,
the necessity for an art identifiable
with and supportive of this historical period
and of the Regime, in search of a consensus
between artists and the public, was already
being felt in Pistoia in the second half of the
poetica. La stessa autonomia poetica
come sola via autentica all’arte, che anche
Bartoletti contribuiva a difendere in alcuni
toti 2007, pp. 87-92; sisi 1980, pp. 135-
140). Una posizione questa dell’autonomia
poetica che, riconnettendosi sicuramente
alle strade indicate da Costetti e Michelucci,
sarebbe diventata marca distintiva
Venti e Trenta, adesso giovanissimi. Chiude
ampio panorama dell’arte italiana.
1930s, leading in turn to various disputes in
newspapers and magazines of the time (sisi
1980, pp. 137-138; see salvi 2004).
This led in the early 1940s to exhibitions
aligned with the rhetoric of the Regime, to
the point that they counted almost as apologias,
such as the The Mother and the
Soldier exhibition of 1941. The 1941 Mostra
Provinciale d’Arte Contemporanea, with
the theme The Heroes of Gondar, caused
dissent and defection among some artists
who, though they were not in open political
opposition, meant once more to assert the
autonomy of their art: an autonomy which
Bartoletti, in articles published in Ferruccio,
defended as the only valid status for art, asserting
that artists should have independence
in their thematic and formal choices,
thus legitimizing their claim to represent
exclusively the “artist’s interiority”, in which
form need not submit to the dictates of reality
(see toti 2007, pp. 87-92; sisi 1980, pp.
135-140).
This position, which harked back to the aesthetics
of Michelucci and Costetti, was to be
central to the credo of post-war art artists,
the generation born in the 1920s and 1930s,
who were still very young.
The exhibition closes with Mariotti’s The
Young Sigfrido Bartolini (p. 223), with its
intimate and intriguing play of glances exchanged
between the boy, the painter offstage,
and the viewer. It was to be Bartolini,
himself an artist and art critic, who would
be a witness to the early generations, writing
important, influential studies and encouraging
the Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia
e Pescia to collect the art of the twentiethcentury
artists of Pistoia, aware of the importance
that this episode held in the wider
perspective of Italian art.
