Omeriche, virgiliane, bucoliche, sono le suggestioni che la Campania felix
offre, fonte di ispirazione per scrittori, artisti e registi di varie epoche. Se
il contemporaneo Raffaele La Capria, innamorato del mare, ha scritto Capri
e non più Capri, nell’Ottocento il pittore Giacinto Gigante ha immortalato
la costiera amalfitana sotto una tempesta e Rossellini ha girato qui Viaggio
in Italia. C’è un’Ischia mistica in Erri De Luca, Procida è L’isola di Arturo
per Elsa Morante, ci sono distese verdi nei libri di Domenico Rea.
land of inspiration Homeric, Virgilian, bucolic, these are just some of
the words used to describe the happy Campania, a place which has been
a constant source of inspiration for writers, artists and directors down
through the years. Modern day author, Raffaele La Capria, who is besotted
with the sea, wrote Capri e non più Capri, the painter Giacinto Gigante
immortalised the Amalfi coast in the 19th century, and Rossellini filmed
Viaggio in Italia. We find the mystical Ischia in Erri De Luca, while there are
green stretches in the books of Domenico Rea.

È ancora oggi il Grand Lieu della mondanità internazionale: dalla Migliara,
la passeggiata dei romantici, a via Camerelle, sfilata di boutique blasonate.
Ma la Capri più autentica, ferma a mille anni fa, è quella delle contrade della
Torina e di Cesina, sperdute nella macchia mediterranea.

4| VIaggIo Nel tempo
A Pompei la vita quotidiana dei Romani è rimasta
bloccata, come in un’istantanea, dalla colata di lava
del 79 a.C. Da Porta Marina ci si imbatte nella Basilica,
si scende al grande Foro, da qui alle Terme e al
Macellum. Struggente la Casa degli Amorini dorati:
era la dimora di Poppea, con il cortile decorato
da mosaici dove si svolgevano spettacoli teatrali.
A trip Back in time The everyday life of Romans was

Coni vulcanici eruttano fango caldo, sorgenti
di anidride carbonica sgorgano dalle rocce gialle:
è lo spettacolo infernale della Solfatara di Pozzuoli,
cratere vulcanico. In città si scopre l’Anfiteatro
Flavio del I sec. d. C. e il mercato del pesce, uno
dei più grandi del Sud, rifornito da una flotta
di pescherecci.

out hot mud, carbon dioxide springs which flow
from yellow rocks: this is the infernal show on display
at the volcanic crater, Solfatara di Pozzuoli. In the city
we find the Flavio Amphitheatre, which dates back to
the 1st century, and the fish market, one of the biggest
in the South, which is well supplied by a flotilla of
fishing boats.
